Alvin "Al" Bernard Cormier, Age 84, passed away on Tuesday June 6, 2023, at his home in St. Martinville surrounded by his wife and kids.
Born on November 28,1938, Al was a lifetime resident of St. Martinville and a 1956 graduate of St. Martinville Senior High School. After graduating, his first job was working as an appliance/furniture serviceman for Walters Furniture, in St. Martinville. He met the love of his life, Gerry Broussard Cormier, and they were married in 1962. Shortly afterwards they opened Al’s Maytag Home Appliance Store.
As a trusted, outstanding, and successful businessman for over 50 years in his community, his service did not end there. Throughout his adult life, he and Gerry volunteered many hours to the community in which they lived. They organized the first Youth Group for St. Martin De Tours Church and were instrumental in assisting Fr. Michael Champagne in opening the Community of Jesus Crucified. For over 25 years, he also served as a volunteer for Hospice of Acadiana, where he was able to meet the needs of parish residents with terminal illness. Al also served as Ward 1 Constable for 18 years in St. Martin Parish.
Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Those that knew him know that he had a passion for hunting and fishing and enjoyed many great times in his duck blind and at "Duh Camp" with his friends, children, and grandchildren. He also enjoyed dancing with his wife on weekends at festivals and clubs throughout the Acadiana area.
He will be remembered as a humble, grateful, and faithful servant to God, his family, and his country.
Al is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gerry Broussard Cormier; sons, Clint Cormier, Guy (Julia) Cormier and Brady Cormier. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stefan (Carly) Cormier, Micah Cormier, Bronson (Leighanna) Cormier, Jonah (Paige) Cormier, Logan Cormier, Callie Cormier, and Brianne Cormier. He also had 2 great-grandchildren, Valarie Cormier and Gemma Cormier.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arista and Elaine Castille Cormier; his son, Rusty Cormier; and a grandson, Zach Cormier.
Pallbearers will be his 7 grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dwayne Judice, Glen Roberts, Roland Babin, Roland Talley, and his lifetime hunting partner, Louis Durand.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Acadiana, especially Alyson Eastin Champagne and Amy Babineaux Green, for their compassion and service to the community.
