New Iberia - A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia for Albert J. Rivers, Sr., 88, who passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, in New Iberia.
Deacon Durk Viator will officiate.
A gathering of family and friends will be at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia from 8:00 am until 10:00 am on Sunday.
Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in New Iberia.
A resident of New Iberia, Albert James Rivers, Sr. was born in Shreveport, LA on December 7, 1932 to the late George Washington Rivers, Sr. and Martha Holder Rivers. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1949 until 1952, then served in the U.S. Army until his retirement from the military in 1972. After retirement, he worked as a cook for Gulf Coast Catering, and enjoyed woodworking and selling his items at craft shows.
Mr. Rivers is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Janell Landry Rivers; daughter, Laura Rivers Roeben (husband, Herman) of Celina, TX; two stepdaughters, Trudy Gondron (husband Scott) of New Iberia, and Roxane Mayfield (husband Travis) of New Iberia; two stepsons, Nathan Derouen (wife Stacey) of New Iberia, and Kerry Derouen (wife Christine) of Yougnsville; sister, Marilyn Geist of Houma; four grandchildren, Jason (wife Bonnie), Michelle, Julie and Natisha; sisters-in-law, Lucille and Penny Rivers; 12 step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, Albert James Rivers, Jr., and George Rivers; three siblings, George Washington Rivers, Jr., Gerald Rivers, and Aline Rivers Wright; and brothers-in-law, Bud Wright and Lloyd Geist.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Derouen, Kerry Derouen, Scott Gondron, Ben Proctor, Scotty Derouen, and Andy Mayfield.
