St. Martinville - A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Pellerin Funeral Home Chapel in St. Martinville, for Alfred "Papop" Johnson, 66, who passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at his residence.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 7:00 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, at Pellerin Funeral Home in St. Martinville.
Brother Chester Serpas will officiate at the Funeral Service.
Mr. Johnson was veteran of the Vietnam War, proudly and honorably serving his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America (Hill 141), American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. Alfred never passed up an opportunity to help his fellow veterans - he always encouraged veterans to continue helping other veterans.
As a pastime, Alfred enjoyed riding in his car, traveling, going to the park, and dancing. He was quick-witted and loved telling jokes. Alfred especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
Alfred will long be remembered for his inspirational quote that he'd often share, "If you're weak, you're beat!" - those words were so encouraging to those who felt down and out. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Florence Johnson of Lafayette; his daughters, Vanessa (Harry) Taylor of Springfield, MO and Rochelle (Rodney) Vallier of Lafayette; his grandchildren, whom he adored, Desiree' Wiltz, Devin Vallier and Bryson Vallier; his sisters, Delores (Leroy) Landry of Alexandria, Laura Johnson of Houston, TX, and Bessie Johnson of Houston, TX; his brothers, Murphy (Arlene) Johnson, Wilfred (Eloise) Johnson, both of Baton Rouge, Nelton Johnson of Oakland, CA, and Melvin Johnson of St. Martinville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Murphy and Rose Johnson; his father-in-law, Columbus Jones, Sr.; his mother-in-law, Irene James Jones Delacroix; his sister, Generita Johnson; his brothers-in-law, Columbus "Pocket" Jones, Jr., Phillip "Bo" Jones, and Paul "Choppa" Jones; and his sister-in-law, Jeanette Johnson.
Alfred's family would like to extend special thanks to Maison De Williams, Share Care (Blanch and Christine), Heart of Hospice (Chad, Katie, and Shelby), VA Home Base Primary Care (Temisha Sonnier), Amian Angles (John Lewis), private sitter, (Dorothy "Ms. Dee" Montgomery), and Dr. Milton Jolivette, for the compassionate care given to him during his time of need.
