New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, February 1, 2013 at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church in New Iberia for Amelia Segura Selph, 98, who died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, in New Iberia.
Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery.
Rev. Mike Arnaud will be the Celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will be Thursday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia. A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday from 8:00 AM until 10:30 AM.
Amelia was born on November 16, 1914 in, Coteau, Louisiana. The daughter of Paul F. Segura and Levi Broussard Segura, and is survived by her brother Perry Segura. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Clyde Selph; her two sisters, Pearly Segura Babineaux and Mildred Segura Gisclair and her two siblings, the late General Wiltz P. Segura and Huey F. Segura.
Amelia was a dedicated educator who graduated from New Iberia High School and SLI, now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she graduated Cum Laude and honored by several honorary academic sororities. She later received a master's degree from Florida State University.
She started her teaching career at the Weeks Island School and was later transferred to the Coteau elementary school because of her ability to teach French speaking children.
In 1947 she married Clyde Selph and moved to Sarasota, Florida where she continued her teaching career, until her retirement having being honored there as teacher of the year. After her husband's passing, she moved back to New Iberia to be with her siblings, where she was very happy to reunite with some of her former students. Prior to her passing Amelia was never blessed with children, but was always proud of her many nieces and nephews. She often prayed to God and her Mother in Heaven to take her to Heaven. On January 29, 2013 at 3:30 a.m. her wish was granted.
Pallbearers will be Mark Segura, Minus 'Chippy' Gisclar, Huey 'Chopper' Segura, Lawson Paul Babineaux, Chris Segura, David Segura, Craig Babineaux, and Perry 'Tootie' Segura, II.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Acadiana for the wonderful care and compassion given to Amelia in her hours of need especially Jenee' Segura, Judith Crowder, Carolyn Fontenet, Vanessa Martin, and Latanya Senegal.
