An area resident for most of her life, Ms. Barber was born on June 24, 1944 in Catahoula and was a 1964 graduate of New Iberia Senior High. She worked for many years at The Café in Cypress Bayou Casino and also at Café Jefferson located at Rip Van Winkle Gardens. An avid movie buff, Ms. Barber not only enjoyed watching them but also knowing everyone involved with the production of the movie, such as the actors, directors, producers and others. She stayed active in many different ways, including dancing and exercising.

Ms. Barber’s children, grandchildren and all of her family was her life. She loved spending time with all of them and was known for cooking special dishes, like crawfish etouffee, spaghetti and many others. Alice always talked about how blessed she was to be part of the Derouen family. She deeply loved all of her aunts, uncles, cousins and all of the Derouen family. They taught her that family is always there for each other and she has passed this on to her children.

Survivors include daughter Teresa "Terrie" Barber; son Stephen James Barber; grandchildren, Shealy Barber (Steven Allen), Macy Barber, Shandi Taylor Barber and Isabella Barber; great-grandchildren, Amelia Lanza and Isla Allen; brother Ivan Polk; and a sister Rose Cox.

She is preceded in death by her adopted father, Aristile Bailey; adopted mother, Mable Derouen Bailey; sister, Mary Horton; brother, James Horton; birth father, Lawrence Andrew Horton; birth mother, Ophelia Postieau; grandfather, John Walter Derouen; grandmother, Felicie Delahoussaye Derouen.
