St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for August Leo Thomas, 88, who passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Iberia Medical Center. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm on Tuesday, and continue at 7:30 am until 9:30 am on Wednesday. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Tuesday. Rev. Rusty P. Richard will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Entombment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum in St. Martinville. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the United States Navy, having honorably served his country during World War II. He was injured at Omaha Beach - Normandy on D-Day and received a Purple Heart. He was retired with the State of Louisiana - Department of Health, where he served as a Health Sanitarian for many years. Mr. Thomas, an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting and fishing, and he also enjoyed cooking and listening to music. He is survived by his son, George (Kathy) Thomas; four daughters, Claudine Gauthier, Rebecca (Warren) Borel, Leslie Thomas, and Lorraine Melancon; his brother, Otis "Noonie" Thomas; 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude Mathias Thomas and Liviande Hebert Thomas; his wife, Georgie Bergeron Thomas; two sisters, Bernice Signorelli and Jenny Granger; and two brothers, Claude 'Chook' Thomas and Albert 'Boots' Thomas. Pallbearers will be Matt Randazzo, David Borel, Jamie Borel, Tory Joubert, Daniel Thomas, Ryan Melancon, ;Logan Twite, ;and Jude Dugas.
