New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, in New Iberia for Bill Desormeaux Sr, 71, who died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in New Orleans. Entombment will follow in Holy Family Mausoleum. Rev. Mark Derise will be the Celebrant. A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mr. Desormeaux served on the City of New Iberia Fire Dept, retiring on September 15, 1988, after 30 years of service, of which the last 13 years he served as Fire Chief. He was an advisor to the Iberia Athletic Boxing Club, an official for Golden Gloves & AAU Boxing Tournaments, director of LA. High School Ex-Punchers Association, director of the Iberia Parish Ex-Punchers Association, Umpire for American Legion & High School Baseball games, member of the Board of Directors & Coach at the Evangeline Little League, member of the Board of Directors for New Iberia District 4, served two terms on the Iberia Parish City Council, served three years on the Iberia Parish School Board, served on the Board of Directors of the New Iberia Pee Wee Football, chairman of the Board of Directors & member of the LA Firefighters Retirement System, member of Board of Directors of the LA Firefighters Union Local 755, participated in President Kennedy's Health for Americans 50 mile walk, participated in the very first slow pitch softball game in New Iberia - New Iberia Firefighters vs Port Arthur Firefighters, and a member of the LA Fire Chiefs Association. An avid golfer, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved to watch his grandchildren compete in sports. Mr. Desormeaux also loved family gatherings. Survivors include his wife of nearly 54 years, Joycelyn Delcambre Desormeaux of New Iberia; sons, Bill Desormeaux, II and wife Patty of New Iberia, Hughes Desormeaux and wife Christi of New Iberia, Thad Desormeaux and wife Kelly of New Iberia, Scott Desormeaux and wife Catherine of Abbeville, David Desormeaux of New Iberia; daughter, Sonnia Young and husband David of Delcambre; brothers, Adam Desormeaux, Jr. and wife Jeanette of New Iberia, Carol Desormeaux of New Iberia; grandchildren, Beau, Michael, and Matthew Desormeaux, Olivia LeBlanc, Tara Lipari, Caleb Young, Hannah Young, Jeremiah Desormeaux, Jennifer, Melissa, Victoria and Catherine Desormeaux, Adam, Amelie, Cecile, Lydia, Marie-Alena, and Ella Desormeaux; great grandchildren, Alexis, Cole and Layne Lipari, Jordan, Gage, and Riley LeBlanc, Kade and Averi Desormeaux, Drew Desormeaux, Logan and Amelia Rader, and Isaac Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam Desormeaux, Sr. and Edith Vice Desormeaux; brother, Jim Desormeaux; sister, Kelli Louivere. Pallbearers will be Adam Desormeaux, Beau Desormeaux, Caleb Young, Jeremiah Desormeaux, Matthew Desormeaux, and Michael Desormeaux. A gathering of family and friends will be Friday, from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM at Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, in New Iberia. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM Friday. Visitation will continue Saturday from 8:00 AM until 10:30 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, c/o New Iberia Fire Dept, 224 Prairie Ave, New Iberia, LA. 70560.
