New Iberia - Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM , Friday, January 6, 2012 , at Highland Baptist Church in New Iberia , for Birdie 'Macy' Matthews, 91, who passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in New Iberia . Interment will follow in Beau Pre Cemetery . Rev. David Denton will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will be Thursday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd , in New Iberia .. Visitation will continue Friday from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM . Born on May 16, 1920 , Mrs. Matthews attended LSU and was a Sunday School Teacher for over 70 years. Her hobbies included art, gardening, and traveling. She enjoyed helping others by volunteering with the Iberia Parish Cancer Society, and by providing food to those in need. Survivors include her son, Roy Harris Matthews and wife Linda of Broussard; daughters, Susan Matthews McKnight and husband John of New Iberia, Mrs. Don (Patricia) Matthews Wells of New Iberia; brother, Jack Harris and wife Dorothy of Longview, Texas; six grandchildren, Angie Kay Matthews, Wendy Wells DuBose and husband James, Vicki Matthews Bellot, Quay McKnight and wife Lauren, Johnson 'Matt' McKnight and wife Leah, Mandy McKnight Powell and husband Jeff; eleven great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and one due to arrive in May. She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, Melvin A. 'Matt' Matthews; parents, Homer and Dessie Penn Harris; son-in-law, Benjamin Don Wells; sister, Alice Elizabeth Doughty; brother, Malcolm Harris. Pallbearers will be Quay McKnight, Johnson 'Matt' McKnight, John McKnight, Cody Matthews, James DuBose, and Joe Guillory. Honorary pallbearers include Jeremy LeBlanc, Shelley Dickie, Sam Matson, and Terry Mosley. The family would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Matthews' sitters, Rita Mae Jacquet, Shirley Davis, Roxanne Smith, and Brenda Oubre for their extraordinary care and support. Memorial contributions may be made to Highland Baptist Church , Music and Flower Program, 607 Victory Drive , New Iberia , LA 70563 .
