New Iberia – Brenda DeBuse Rutherford, 80, a remarkable soul who touched the lives of many with her warmth and kindness, passed away at 1:50 am, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at her residence. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the First Methodist Church, in New Iberia. Interment will be at a later date.
Visitation will be at the church, on Saturday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am.
Brenda dedicated her life to education, serving as a schoolteacher at New Iberia Junior High. Alongside her beloved husband, Don, she also co-owned and operated Brendon Golf Course for 20 years, leaving an indelible mark on both the academic and recreational spheres of her community.
A native of New Iberia, Brenda was born on February 21, 1944, to the late Ernest and Hilda Case DeBuse. Her journey was marked by grace, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others. A graduate of New Iberia High School and USL, now the University of Louisiana Lafayette, she exemplified the values of lifelong learning and personal growth.
A pillar of strength and compassion, Brenda's personality was as radiant as her smile. She was like a mother, grandmother, and aunt to so many. Her capacity to nurture relationships extended beyond blood ties, as she selflessly cared for those around her.
Brenda's passion for music was evident in every note she sang. As a valued member of her church choir, she served as Choir Director, inspiring others to praise the Lord through song.
She was very active in numerous organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star, United Methodist Women, and the Woman’s Club. Brenda also served on the Rosehill Cemetery Board.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Rutherford; niece, Jennifer Gray; nephew, Jameson Gray; and several extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her sister, Marion Gray.
