Caffery Alexander

Breaux Bridge - Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, September 26, 2008 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, for Caffery "Grey Hand" Alexander, 98, who passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at St. Agnes Nursing Home, in Breaux Bridge. Interment will follow at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Breaux Bridge. Mr. Alexander was a veteran of World War II, having honorably served his country in the United States Army. "Grey Hand," as he was better known to his family and friends, loved politics. He was the first black police officer in Breaux Bridge and also served as a Magnolia Police officer. He was a member of American Legion Post 578, Knights of Peter Claver - Council 49, the Police Association, the NAACP, and a contributing member of the Breaux Bridge Volunteer Fire Company. Survivors include his son, Joseph Melvin Alexander (Alma), of Breaux Bridge; his daughter, Shirley Alexander Green (Gerard), of Lafayette; one sister, Gertrude Dandridge, of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Debbie Green and Gerard Green, III; and a great grandchild, Kori Lynn Green. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes B. Alexander; his parents, Clement and Albertine Alexander; three brothers, Preston, Horace and Arista Alexander; and three sisters, Juanita Lewis, Anita MacDonald, and Eula Anderson. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Friday. A rosary will be recited at 8 a.m. on Friday. Pallbearers will be Joseph Melvin Alexander, Gerard Green, Jr., Emile Henry, Gerard Green, III, David Hypolite, and Gregory Dandridge. Pellerin Funeral Home, 416 Dauterive St., Breaux Bridge, LA, is in charge of arrangements.
