New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:30 am on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church in New Iberia for Catherine McDonald Darcey, 80, who passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at her home. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery.
Rev. Ed Degeyter will be the Celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will be at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Monday, and will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 am until 10:45 am.
A rosary, led by the Nativity Rosary Group, will be prayed at 6:00 pm on Monday.
A lifelong area resident, Catherine McDonald Darcey was born on November 9, 1938 to the late Berwick Joseph McDonald Sr. and Ora Bailleaux McDonald. She was a 1956 graduate of New Iberia High School, and worked in banking and finance, and at Taylor's Drug Store. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Dauterive Hospital for 39 years, and at The Shadows on the Teche for many years. Mrs. Darcey was a longtime faithful member of Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church, where she served on the Ladies Altar Society. She was a member of DAR and Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Darcey was very organized, and a people person. Her hobbies included genealogy, cooking, gardening, cross stitching and traveling, and she loved dancing with Donald and shopping. She will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Darcey is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Donald Darcey; daughter, Denise Hebert and husband Boyd of Pooler, GA; granddaughter, Haleigh Cuerden and husband Barry of Bluffton, SC; great-grandchildren, Anslie, Allie, Liam and Connor Cuerden; sisters-in-laws, Rita McDonald, Dorothy McDonald, Ruby McDonald, Elsie Darcey, and Sherry Darcey; and godchildren, Tina Broussard and Lori Toups.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Berwick Joseph McDonald, Jr., Henry McDonald, Kermit McDonald, Sr. and Allen McDonald; and a sister, Gwinne Broussard.
Pallbearers will be Chad Darcey, Mike McDonald, Neil McDonald, Leigh Ann Bellard, Keith Martin, and Brent McDonald.
Honorary pallbearers are Boyd Hebert, Barry Cuerden, Liam Cuerden, Christopher Darcey.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Catherine's caregivers, Hannah Bourque Wright, Leigh Ann Bellard, Veronica Duhon, Tonya Romero, and Shalita Granger, and to the staffs of Acadian Hospice and Acadian Home Health for excellent care.
Also, special thanks to Christy Lannie and Tina Broussard for your love and compassionate concern.
The family would also like to thank Catherine's dearest friend, Rita Girouard, for everything she has done over the years.
