New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, October 22, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Iberia for Charlsie "Bootsie" Maturin, 67, who passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Rev. Bill Melancon will be the Celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will be at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Sunday, and will continue on Monday from 8:00 am until 9:30 am.
A eulogy will be given at 6:00pm Sunday, followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 pm.
Entombment will be at a later date.
A lifelong resident of New Iberia, Charlsie Champagne Maturin was born on August 17, 1951. She graduated from New Iberia Senior High in 1969 and McNeese University in 1973. She married her husband, Ellis, in 1973, then started a family immediately. She began her teaching career at New Iberia Senior High in 1973 where she taught and coached until 1980. She then went on to teach at Anderson Middle School, coached at New Iberia Freshman High, taught and coached at Loreauville High School, and taught and coached at Belle Place Middle School until her retirement in 1999. She then opened Pelican Driving School in 2000 and was owner and operator until the time of her death.
Charlsie was a volleyball referee from 1974 until 1993, serving as assignment secretary for the Iberia Volleyball Association from 1975-2010. She umpired Little League baseball and softball from 1980-1992. She umpired softball (high school) from 1974-1984 and served as assignment secretary for the Iberia Softball Association from 1984-2010. Charlsie proudly held three State Championship titles - 1969 volleyball player at New Iberia Senior High as a Senior, 1976 as Coach of the only State Softball Champions at New Iberia Senior High, and 1980 as an Assistant Coach to the girls’ Basketball team at New Iberia Senior High. She was proud to be the first woman in the State of Louisiana to coach a High School Boys’ Basketball team while at Loreauville High School.
Charlsie was inducted into the New Iberia Recreation Hall of Fame, the USSSA Hall of Fame, and the New Iberia Senior High Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Driving School Association of Louisiana and was a past member of the board for the Pepper Plex. Charlsie loved spending time with her family, especially watching her grandchildren play sports. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and was proud of all of their accomplishments.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Ellis Maturin, Jr.; daughters, Charlsie Buteaux of New Iberia, Carley Maturin of New Orleans, and Cammie Maturin and fiance Sirvoris Sutton of New Iberia; brother, Roy Champagne of Alaska; sisters, Deanna Charpentier of New Iberia, Nettie (David) Webb of Baytown, TX, Wendy (Oscar) Pepper of Baytown, TX, Jackie Champagne of Milton, Kim (Freddie) Spiker of New Iberia; grandchildren, Creighton Buteaux, Collin Buteaux, Jade Boutte, Hana Maturin, and Marcus Jacob, Jr.; and dear friends, Anna Lucia, Mary Ayo, and Gail Landry.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy J. Champagne, mother, Lonia Kimball Champagne, and a sister, Roylin Champagne Boudreaux.
Pallbearers will be Creighton Buteaux, Collin Buteaux, Marcus Jacob, Jr., Marcus Jacob, Sr., Michael Maturin, Curtis Maturin.
Honorary pallbearers are Jeffrey Mitchell, Derwin Antoine, Gene Nora, Freddie Spiker, Heath "Bootie" Spiker.
