New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 108 E. St. Peter Street, in New Iberia, for Deacon Jay A. Bergeron, 56, who passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016, in Lafayette. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia. Rev. Scott Chemino will be the Celebrant, and The Most Reverend Bishop Glen J. Provost, Bishop of the Diocese of Lake Charles will be the Homilist. A gathering of family and friends will be Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM. A Vigil Service with a Rosary, with Deacon Joseph Hebert officiating, will be at 7:00 PM Friday. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 8:00 AM until 9:45 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church. Deacon Bergeron was born on November 15, 1959 to Dell Andrew Bergeron and Janice Sigur Bergeron, and has been a lifelong area resident. He began his career in health care 38 years ago as a Respiratory Therapist/EEG Tech. and moved into Surgical Technology in 1979. Deacon Bergeron studied Philosophy and Theology at Loyola University and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He worked for the Surgery Center in Lafayette for the past 15 years as a Certified Surgical Technologist and Certified Surgical First Assistant, and for the last 13 years he was also the Director of the Material Management and Purchasing Department. In 2012, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Lafayette, serving at St. Mary Magdalen in Abbeville, and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. He has been involved in many civic organizations and had the privilege to experience the work of the medical missions in Lima, Peru, and in several locations throughout Mexico many times over the last 30 years. Deacon Bergeron was a member of the National Board of Surgical Technicians and Surgical First Assistants Association, and the Order of Knights of St. Lazarus. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, music, and most of all helping others. Survivors include his mother, Janice Bergeron of Lydia; sisters, Maria Boudreaux and husband Raymond "Jay" of Rynella, Tracey Kelone and husband Joel of Lydia, Jan Reid of Kingston, OK; brothers, Andrew Bergeron and wife Jean of New Iberia, Bradley Bergeron and wife Laurie of Iberia Parish; several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was preceded in death by father, Dell Andrew Bergeron; grandparents, Dell Joseph Bergeron, Carrie Savoie Bergeron, Irving Louis Sigur, Sr., Sadie Kern Sigur; and an infant brother. Pallbearers will be Dr. Andrew St. Martin, David Daly, Ricky LeBlanc, George Cook, Kevin Hebert, and Kalil Ackal. Honorary pallbearers include Zach LeBlanc, William "Billy" LeBlanc. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
