Deacon Marcel "Butch" Hebert will officiate at the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2 in Breaux Bridge.
Earl, known to many as "Pete," was born August 14, 1928 in Breaux Bridge. He worked at the Breaux Bridge Sugar Co op during grinding season operating loading cranes and pay loader for many years. He was also a painter by trade and enjoyed his own style of artwork. Pete was involved in his community and was active with the Civil Defense and Auxiliary support team for St Martin Parish during disasters, festivals and special events.
In his early years, Pete was a steel guitar player for the Louisiana Swingsters and other local groups around South Louisiana. He enjoyed listening to country music, watching Saints football, cooking his special hamburger recipe for his family, discussing politics and talking to the locals as he made his rounds in town. Pete always had a cup of coffee made for him and Thelma to start their day together at the kitchen table, they were never apart. Hospitality was a natural virtue for Pete and his wife, they were very generous with their time and talents. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Thelma Trahan Melancon of Breaux Bridge; six sons, Michael L. (Gail) Melancon of Breaux Bridge, Chris (Faye) Melancon of Breaux Bridge, Francis "Franny" (Sandra) Melancon of Rocky Face, GA, Mark Melancon of Breaux Bridge, Troy (Susan) Melancon of Breaux Bridge and Todd (Melissa) Melancon of Breaux Bridge; daughter, Sally (Danny) Comb of Breaux Bridge; sister, Mary Ann Melancon; twelve grandchildren, Kevin Melancon, Kelly Melancon, Kasey (Kara) Melancon, Kory Melancon, Codie (Aaron) Liebert, Jandy (Matt) Tyl, Franny Melancon, Jr., Beth (Perrin) Rodriguez, Denise (Ryan)Simon, Emma (Jordy) Vice, Dillon Comb and Renee (Jeremy) Dore; and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Louise M. Melancon; son, Kim John Melancon; and one sister, Hazel Degeyter.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Jennifer and Lynelle with Hope Healthcare and Hospice and the staff at St. Agnes Healthcare & Rehab Center for the wonderful care given to Pete.
