Earl Morrogh

July 3, 1918 — December 22, 2010

Arnaudville - Dr. Earl Herbert Morrogh, Sr. died on December 22, 2010 at the age of 92. Dr. Earl, as he was most commonly known, was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, a caring doctor, a talented diagnostician, and an astute student of human nature. He loved people, poetry, the natural world, a good laugh, good food, and, above all, his family. However, it was obvious to everyone that the love of his life was his wife of 68 years, Lillian. Born on July 3, 1918 in St. Landry Parish, Dr. Earl was the younger of Lailor and Gladys Morrogh's two boys. He attended public schools in Arnaudville before entering Louisiana State University Medical School where he graduated in 1941. It was during his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans that he fell in love with and married a beautiful nurse by the name of Lillian Lola Stolberg. After completing his internship they moved to Pineville , Louisiana where he fulfilled his residency at Huey P. Long Hospital and shortly thereafter joined the Army. After serving as a physician for three years in the Army, he and his young family returned to Cecilia. There, he practiced medicine for two years before merging his practice in 1949 with Dr. Robert Morrow, Sr., a childhood friend from Arnaudville. Together they served the communities of Arnaudville, Leonville, and Cecilia for 40 years before dissolving their practice. Loving medicine, they then made rounds for 12 more years at the J. Michael Morrow Nursing Home, a facility they co-founded. One resident of J. Michael is quoted as saying, 'If you are so sick that Dr. Earl can't cure you, he will at least make you die laughing.' His quick wit and famous sense of humor will be deeply missed. Among the people who will miss him the most are: his wife, Lillian Morrogh; his daughters, Judi (and Steve) Axthelm and Stephanie (and Blair) Tighe; his sons, Kenneth (and Bonita) Morrogh and Earl Morrogh, Jr. (and Judye McCalman); his grandchildren, Sean (and Heather) Morrogh, Colin Morrogh, Joan Axthelm (and Louis Villaire), Ned Axthelm (and Emily Howard). Blair Tighe, Jr., Shea (and Minna) Tighe, and Evan Tighe; his step-grandchild, Dwight (and Theresa) DuBose; his great-grandchildren, London and Donovan Morrogh, Gus Villaire; and his step-great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Zachary DuBose. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lailor Anthony Morrogh, Sr. and Gladys Ethel Callen Morrogh; his brother L.A. Morrogh, and his wife, Margaret; maternal grandparents, Stephan and Joanna Coughlin Callen; and paternal grandparents, Frank and Cordelia Durio Morrogh. Dr. Earl will be remembered as a kind, compassionate, gentle, and soft-spoken man who was dedicated to his family, his patients, and his profession. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Gary Schexnayder at 11 a.m. , on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Arnaudville, with interment following at St. John Francis Regis Cemetery. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 12 noon until 9 p.m. on Monday, December 27th, there will be a recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Monday evening; visitation will continue on Tuesday at 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Pellerin Funeral Home, 314 St. Landry St., Arnaudville, LA 70512, (337.754.5881), is in charge of arrangements.
