New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Iberia for Ellis Joseph Hargrave, 91, who passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018, in New Iberia.
Interment will follow in Beau Pre Cemetery in Jeanerette.
Rev. Bill Melancon will be the Celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will be Wednesday from 4:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Pellerin Funeral Home. A rosary, led by the Mens Rosary Group, will be prayed at 7:00 pm Wednesday. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 8:00 am until 9:30 am.
A native of Kaplan, Mr. Ellis was born on August 8, 1926 to the late Ovey and Emela Vidala Hargrave and has been a resident of New Iberia since 1954. He proudly served our country in the US Navy Amphibious Forces in the Pacific during World War II. His unit helped drive the Japanese from the Marshall Mariane, Caroline Islands and in the Philippines Liberation at Leyte, and was also part of the liberation forces that drove the Japanese from Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
After the war, Mr. Hargrave earned a BS and Masters degree from SLI, now ULL. He taught at Hopkins School for 8 years, and then in 1962, he was appointed Principal of Peebles School and served there until 1971. He was then appointed principal of Park Special Education, which became Iberia Special Services in 1976. During that interval, he was appointed part time supervisor of Adult Education. Mr. Hargrave retired from the Iberia School System in 1986, and in 1987 was elected to serve as District 2 School Board Member. He served in that capacity for 8 years, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed reading, sitting on the front porch listening to country music, telling Cajun Jokes, and sharing stories about his experience during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Broussard Hargrave of New Iberia; daughter, Jacqueline Dugas and husband Larry of New Iberia son, Mark Hargrave and wife Debra of Youngsville; brother, Ovey Hargrave and wife Agnes of Lafayette; grandchildren, Allison Trahan and husband Scott, Kelli Broussard and husband David Broussard, Jr., Laura Hogan and husband Michael, Adam Dugas and wife Jehana; great grandchildren, Aubrey Trahan, Makenzie Trahan, Mindi Broussard, Aria Hogan, Luke Hogan, Baylen Dugas, and baby Hogan due to arrive in November
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melinda Louviere; brothers, Ovie Hargrave, Fernand Hargrave, Otis Hargrave, Essie Hargrave, sisters, Elvie Bourque, Mable DeHart, and Lucille Smith.
Pallbearers will be Adam Dugas, Scott Trahan, David Broussard Jr., and Michael Hogan.
