Breaux Bridge - Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 28, 2009, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, for Ethel "TaTa" Gobar Sam, 88, who passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at her residence.
Interment will follow at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Breaux Bridge.
Fr. James Fallon will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Kirra Sam and Kylie Mitchell.
"TaTa," as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was a very outspoken woman and wonderful seamstress, who specialized in designing and making Mardi Gras costumes and gowns. She was a devoted caregiver who opened her home to all who needed. "TaTa" loved animals and would often take them in and care for them, as well. She loved spending time with her family and friends, but most especially, her grandchildren, who meant the world to her.
Survivors include five daughters, Leona Washington and husband, Leroy, Elaine Mathews and husband, Jake, all of Houston, TX, Janice Demouchet and husband, Wilbert, Nancy Sam and husband, Gerard, all of Breaux Bridge, and Sandra Watson and husband, Dwight, of Lafayette; one brother, Wallace Gobar, of Port Arthur, TX; 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Sam, Sr.; three sons, Alex Sam, Jr., Curley Sam, and John F. Sam; her parents, Leah Gobar and Willie Sampy; five sisters, Gertrude Perrot, Norrine Sylvester, Jeanette Alexis, Ruby Paul, and Marie Journet.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home on Carver Dauterive Street, in Breaux Bridge, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday and continue at 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Monday.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Devron Dundas, Jerry Sam, Ferguson Demouchet, Brandon Demouchet, Jerome Demouchet, and Tyrone Sam.
Honorary pallbearers will be Andre Mathews, Kenneth Washington, Dwayne Washington, Harold Jean-Batiste, Robert Noel, and Denzel Dundas.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Community Home Health, for providing her with special care.
