New Iberia - An Informal Memorial Gathering of family and friends of Ferdinand "Kap" Varrelman will meet Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia. Friends are invited to come, visit, share a good memory of Kap and join in a brief prayer. His wishes were to keep this event upbeat and simple!
A longtime resident of New Iberia, Kap was born on March 21, 1932 in Washington, D.C. to the late Ferdinand Armin Varrelman and Sallie Bell Kappes Varrelman. He worked as an agricultural engineer for Diamond Crystal Salt Mine and Trappey's Foods, and was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers. Kap was a problem-solver to the very end. In both his professional and personal life, he took great pride in designing complex industrial systems, fabricating mechanical solutions and, often just for fun, formulating creative "inventions" to everyday practical problems.
He enjoyed reading (especially about government and politics), carpentry, fishing, and cooking his much-loved gumbo. Kap felt blessed to have lived and raised his family in Acadiana with such good neighbors.
A dedicated patriot, he proudly served our country in the US Air Force, during the Korean War, and had a deep love for our Constitution. "There is no such thing has a free lunch".
Survivors include his wife, Myra "Sallie" Beverley Clarence Varrelman of New Iberia; daughters, Sallie Chatfield and husband Peter of Kensington, Maryland, Linda Dautreuil of New Iberia; grandchildren, Kappes Hale Chatfield and wife Joy, Alexia Lynn Chatfield, Jennifer Desormeaux Graycheck and husband Andy, Melissa Desormeaux Fuller and husband Rob; great grandchildren, Andrew Liam Graycheck, Lorelei Rose Graycheck; and his beloved cats who he dearly adored.
The family would like to give special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Kathryn Strother and the Heart of Hospice Team, Allison, Elaine, Terry, Darryl, Amanda and John for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal School of Acadiana, P.O. Box 380, Cade, LA 70519, or St. Edwards School, 175 Porter Street, New Iberia, LA 70560.
Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, New Iberia, LA 70560, 337.365.3331, is in charge of the arrangements.
