Breaux Bridge - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, for Genowefa Sawicki who died peacefully in the early morning hours of July 23, 2008, at Courtyard Manor in Lafayette.
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2 in Breaux Bridge.
Reverend Fr. Louis Allen Breaux, Associate Pastor of St. Bernard Church, will officiate at the funeral Mass and conduct the service.
Mrs. Sawicki was born in Poland, on June 7, 1924. She was the widow of Adam Sawicki, who died in 1984. Mr. and Mrs. Sawicki lost everything in World War II. They resided in Germany for a few years after the war, then immigrated to the United States, to Breaux Bridge, in 1949. She and her husband were grateful to God every single day for the opportunity to live in the United States. They were sponsored by Robert Angelle, and they worked on his dairy farm for many years after their arrival.
She was predeceased by her parents, Maria and Anthony Sawicki. She was also predeceased by a sister, Marisha Sawicki.
She had four children, Helena Sawicki Charts, who was married to Alex Charts, both of whom predeceased her. She is survived by Angela Sawicki King, of Hamden, Connecticut; Irene Sawicki Gauthier, married to Lester J. Gauthier, of Lafayette; and Richard John Sawicki, married to Haley Barron Sawicki, of Lafayette.
She is also survived by four grandchildren: Michelle Claire Gauthier, Camille Elise Gauthier, Michael Adam Gauthier, and Ava Rose Sawicki.
She is survived by a brother, Walter Sawicki, of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and by a sister, Josefa Sawicki Dolezinski, of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who reside in Canada, in Vermont, and in Texas.
Mrs. Sawicki was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Bernard Church Parish in Breaux Bridge. She had participated in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the adoration chapel in that parish. She had been a member of a weekly rosary group.
She was proud of her Polish heritage and she was most proud of her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday and continue at 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday.
