New Iberia - George Maynard Fortier, a cherished figure in the lives of many, passed away on February 16, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 11, 1944, in Dover, New Hampshire, George dedicated his life to serving his country as a proud member of the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Chief Staff Sergeant before retiring, and throughout his distinguished career, he earned several accolades, including the National Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. These honors stand testament to his commitment, bravery, and unwavering dedication.
George was a man who filled the world around him with joy and creativity. He found great delight in arts and crafts, and his love for playful engagement shone brightest when he gathered with family to play board games, creating laughter-filled memories with his nieces and nephews. Though he did not have children of his own, he treasured his relationships with them, pouring his affection into every moment spent together.
George had a spirited personality and also enjoyed playing games on his iPad and riding his three-wheeler. His playful nature brought light to gatherings, as he connected deeply with everyone, ensuring no moment spent together was without joy.
Family and friends will gather to remember George at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Family and friends are invited to share stories during this time.
Mr. Fortier is survived by a sister, Melissa Stutes; nieces and nephews, Brandie Payton (Rodney), Nina Stelly, Kristina Boutte, Aaron Stelly (Erline), Kimberly Stelly, Jessica Faulk, Michael Faulk, Ashley Stutes, and Colby Stutes; and great nieces and nephews, Ashton Brown, Bella Brown, Lauren Stelly, Scotty Stelly, Kaleb Boutte, Kayden Boutte, Mya Payton, India Collins, Journey Jones, Estela Stelly, Aaron Stelly, Jr., Jayvon Barnes, Mariana Hernandez, Marissa Brown, and Jamone Ceaser, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred Fortier, Jr. and Athlyn Blanchie Cole Fortier; and two sisters, Greta Fortier and Doris Gaspard.
Though the world may feel a little dimmer without George, his legacy will continue to live on in our hearts. May he rest in peace.
