George King Munson

Funeral services will be held for Mr. Pratt Munson, 90, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 1st at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, New Iberia, La. Mr. Munson was born on Sept. 7, 1921, to Adela Pratt Munson and Stephen C. Munson, in Pass Christian, Miss. Pratt grew up in Napoleonville and at Albania Plantation in Jeanerette. He attended Jeanerette High School, Sewanee Military Academy, and graduated from Tulane University School of Engineering. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific. Mr. Munson was a retired Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor, practicing in New Iberia for 55 years. He also worked in Agana, Guam as Highway Safety Director for the government of Guam in 1974-75. He returned to New Iberia and served as Iberia Parish Engineer for four years, then returned to private practice. Pratt was active in many social organizations, including The Navy League, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Civil War Round Table, Krewe of Iberians, Boston Club of New Orleans and numerous professional organizations. He was passionate about Acadiana's Civil War history and spearheaded the designation of Camp Pratt, which existed along Highway 182. He was active in the Model A Club of America and was an avid genealogist and historian. Mr. Munson was a committed member of the Church of the Epiphany and Epiphany Day School, and a founding member of Friends of Christ Church Inc. of Napoleonville. Mr. Munson was known as a true southern gentleman and a kind, gentle person who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Margaret P. Munson, his parents, his brother, Stephen C Munson and sisters, Gwen M Hunt and Adela Louise Munson. He is survived by his four children: Peggy M Portmann and husband Kris of Dallas, TX, Olivia (Lili) M Leporace and husband Giuseppe of Redmond, WA., G. King Munson and wife Joni of New Iberia, and J. Avery Munson of Bellaire, TX. He is also survived by one sister, Louise M. Dupont of Houma, LA. and eight grandchildren: Kasey, Camilla, Avery, and Adela Munson; Logan and Hunter Portmann; Alessandro and Luca Leporace. The family is grateful for the loving assistance of his friend and caregiver, Larry Bourque of New Iberia. Visitation will be at Episcopal Church of the Epiphany on Friday, August 31, 5:00pm- 8:00pm and 9:00 am until time of service on Saturday, September 1.
