Geraldine Joffrion Lofton
New Iberia - Geraldine Joffrion Lofton, 90, went home to be with The Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2018, after a valiant struggle with cancer. She would have turned 91 on April 2. Geraldine Rita was born in Napoleonville, LA, to Leonard Morgan Rip Joffrion and Juanita Noel Joffrion in 1927. Geraldine spent her early years in Donaldsonville, LA, with her parents and seven siblings.
In her teen years, while her five older brothers were away fighting in World War II, Geraldine protected the home front by her activities as a spotter who scanned the skies for any encroaching enemy aircraft. She also participated in metal drives and assisted her mother in organizing musical programs which lifted the spirits of local townspeople during those very difficult years when her brothers were away at war.
Geraldine attended LSU two years majoring in home economics. Although she did not complete her degree, her lifetime work was a testimony to superb home management skills. Geraldine married Claude Wilmer Will Lofton in 1948 after a brief courtship, and they would be married for 57 years. Mr. Lofton was a 39-year employee of Shell Oil Company.
It could be said that Geraldine kept the home front going as an oilfield wife. She participated in the Shell Wives Club, Parent Teacher Association at Hilda Roberts School where her children attended, and was a faithful church goer. She enjoyed oil painting as a hobby and was a superb seamstress.
At Mr. Loftons retirement, Geraldine and her husband left their New Iberia home of 35 years and moved to Mr. Loftons birthplace, Brookhaven, MS. They enjoyed a quiet country life on their farm and were members of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Lofton went home to be with The Lord in 2005.
Geraldine is survived by her four children, Chip Felix Lofton of Roxboro, NC, Claudia Lofton Boelte of New Iberia, LA, Suzanne Lofton Williams of Lufkin, TX, and Pauline Lofton Stutes Walden of Covington, GA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Tina Lofton, Justin Lofton, Jordan Lofton, Matthew Lofton, Natalie Stutes Burch, Jennifer Stutes Taylor, Eric Williams, Olivia Williams Ellis and Will Walden. Our family wishes to give special thanks to Jennifer, her husband Richard Taylor, and their four children Madison, Charlie, Brantley, and Emily who gave beautiful care in their own home to Granny after the cancer diagnosis seven months ago. In addition to the great grandchildren listed above, Geraldine is also survived by great grandchildren Amaya Lofton, Demarcus Burch, Benjamin Burch, Terry Lee Burch, Colton Lofton, Levi Lofton, and Mitchell Williams.
A private graveside service and burial next to her husband will be at New Prospect Baptist Church cemetery in Brookhaven, MS, officiated by Pastor Willie Welch.
