Hubert 'Poky' "Poky" Ifield, Jr.

St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Hubert Theodore Ifield, Jr., 86, who passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Camelot of Broussard. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 7:00 am until time of services on Friday at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville. A rosary will be prayed at 9:00 am on Friday. Rev. Michael Sucharski will officiate at the Funeral Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow Queen of Peace Cemetery in St. Martinville. Hubert Theodore Ifield, Jr., loving known as "Poky", was born on October 23, 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the only child born to Hubert and Olivia Brooks Ifield. Growing up in New Orleans, Hubert attended Zavier University Prep. High School. After graduating he attended the Monastery and then joined the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he worked and studied in many countries in Africa and Europe. This was the time that his commitment to helping people was confirmed. In 1955, he met Edmond Patterson and they moved to New York in 1965. While in New York, he worked for a shipyard company in Manhattan and joined St. Simon Stock Church Parish. As a committed parishioner, he saw a great need for a men's support group and started one with the church. His desire to help young men get back on their feet led him to start AA meetings throughout the Bronx area and he became a sponsor to many, reminding those who were in great need of help and support that God was there for them. Hubert moved to St. Martinville in July 2009 to live with his goddaughter and her family. While in St. Martinville he became a parishioner with Notre Dame Catholic Church. He attended the 7 am Mass and always sat in the same pew to hear the beautiful Mass Choir. His love for children led him to teach Catechism to the 1st grade and helped every child learn their prayers in preparation for the sacrament of Communion. His loving spirit touched all that passed his way and he loved everyone that entered his life. He is survived by his godchild, Danielle Fontenette and husband, Kervin; his goddaughter's children that he saw as his own grandchildren, Hope Fontenette, Liza Fontenette, Keri Fontenette, Kervin Fontenette, Jr. and Colin Anthony; his faithful friend, Glenda K. Sonnier; and a host of friends and acquaintences. Hubert is preceded in death by his father and mother; Hubert and Olivia Brooks Ifield; and his dearest friend, Edmond Patterson. Pallbearers will be Timothy Sonnier, Jonas Fontenette, Louis White, Oscar Morton, Kervin Fontenette Sr., and Dennis. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Hospice of Acadiana for the love and excellent care they gave to Hubert.
