Isabella was born February 20, 1925 in Coteau but lived her adult life in New Iberia, Louisiana. She was one of the last of that generation that never had electricity or indoor plumbing when she was a child growing up, and made the sleeping mattresses out of spanish moss and canned most of what was eaten as there was no refrigerator to store anything in. When she was old enough she helped out with many of the chores including picking eggs for breakfast and milking the family cow for fresh milk. One of her first jobs was working at Pelican Creamery where she packaged ice cream into cartons. Very much ahead of her time, she went to and graduated from a local business college with knowledge of typing and shorthand as well as bookkeeping. This experience gained her employment with many local businesses, where she clerked as well as was a seamstress for alterations. Many years she worked in the household/hardware department at JW Loews, as well as clerked for many years at Howard Brothers. When she was older, she stayed home and ironed or repaired clothes for many customers, charging little if any for the service.
Isabella enjoyed gardening and planting many unusual varieties of flowers. She also canned figs and pears from her own trees she grew in her back yard and was known to give away quite a lot. She also for a time raised chickens and sold country eggs when she had always had plenty. Isabella's best talent had to be crocheting, which she excelled at. Self taught, she crocheted doilies as well as afghans and just about anything anyone challenged her with. Her second best talent was sewing, which she could take a pattern and alter it to do whatever you wanted her to do, or just give an idea and the materials and size/measurements and she could sew that too without a problem. Again, she would take very little in payment or in the case of the crocheted items, give them away to lucky recipients of her talents.
Isabella was married June 27, 1963 to Norman Albert Romero of Erath, Louisiana, the love of her life. Isabella and Norman enjoyed over 11 years together until tragically Norman passed away December 23, 1974 in the home they shared. While they were together, they provided foster care for many babies transitioning to forever homes, but never had any of their own. This was not unusual as Isabella was known to have a ready smile and willingness to share what she had.
Isabella has left to mourn her passing, among all the lives she touched with her beautiful spirit, her nieces Margaret Gonsoulin, Sharon Wright and husband Kevin, and Caroline Reaux who in her last 10 years provided special care and assistance for her. Also a very heartfelt thank you to Ronnie Gonsoulin for the help he has provided with her arrangements. Also left to mourn her passing are countless nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a sister Lena Babineaux Delcambre.
