St. Martinville - Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 6, 2005, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Joshua "Jeffery" Mitchell, 72, who died Saturday, July 30, 2005 at Lafayette General Medical Center.
Interment will be in Praise Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Joshua "Jeffery" Mitchell was a lifelong resident of St. Martinville. He was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Union Benevolent Society, and Knights of Peter Claver Ct. 54. He retired in 1999 from Lavert-St. John Refinery after 54 years of employment which began at the early age of 13.
His greatest joy and pleasure was spending time with his family and friends. He was a dedicated father, loving grandfather, wonderful great-grandfather, concerned brother, and a loyal friend to all who were fortunate to have known him.
He was married to the late Agnes Hypolite Mitchell for 40 years and from this union there were four children. He leaves to cherish his memories, Timmy (Christina) Mitchell, Jr., Gail Mitchell, Claudell Mitchell and Sandra Mitchell, all of St. Martinville; his brothers, Albert (Dorothy) Batiste, Jr., Allen (Genevieve) Batiste, Dalton Batiste, Felton (Pauline) Batiste, Harry (Mary Alice) Batiste, Robert Batiste, Steven (Menda) Batiste, Sr., all of St. Martinville; his sisters, Charlene Batiste, Eula Mae Batiste, Hilda Batiste, Thelma Batiste, and Antoinette Mason, all of St. Martinville; dear friend, Eula Mae Washington and her children; godchildren, Mary Leona Boyd, Janet Anthony Broussard, Edward Jones, Jr., Cynthia Waltree and Kavan Washington; children in spirit, Barbara Harrison and Dana Mitchell; one son-in-law, Norman Mallery; eleven grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Agnes Mitchell; father, Antoine Mitchell; parents, Albert and Emma Batiste; one granddaughter, Alisa Mitchell; one brother, Leonard Mitchell and a sister, Marian Mitchell Cole.
The family requested that visiting hours be observed from 4 PM ~ 10 PM on Friday and continue at 7 AM on Saturday until time of service.
A rosary will be recited at 8 PM Friday.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Mitchell, Solinsky Mitchell, Terrion Mitchell, Timmy Mitchell, Jr., Travis Mitchell, and Wilfred Marshall.
Honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Antoine, Delcombre Batiste, Ronald Hypolite, Roy Jones, Patrick Leon, George Mallery, Norman Mallery, Clarence Porter, and Carl Smith.
