Mary Joyce Mazerole Broussard was born in New Iberia, Louisiana on October 4, 1934 to the late Emile & Lucille Arceneaux Mazerole. Soon after graduating from Mt. Carmel Academy in 1954, Joyce married John Gilton Broussard, then began her life’s most important work – raising 10 beautiful gifts from God, her children. Though providing for her family on their farm in Bayou Jack proved difficult at times, they were never short on love – their love for one another and their love of our Lord. Joyce’s unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and adoration of the Blessed Mother was inspirational and will forever be a part of her lasting legacy. Much of Joyce’s life was spent as a living disciple, bringing countless people closer to God and to know the love of Jesus. She was a beautiful example of grace, kindness, and forgiveness. For her many regular visitors, both family and friends, you were guaranteed to leave with a full stomach, a full heart, and a prayer card. She found happiness in nurturing the souls of others and welcomed every stranger she met with open arms. Joyce felt like “home” to so many. Although she never imagined loving anything more than she loved her 10 children, that love continued to multiply with the addition of each of her 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She never missed a chance to rock her babies while singing, “Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue, Teach Me How to Pray.”

Those left to carry on her legacy include her sons, Gilton Broussard, Brian Broussard and wife Debra, Mark Broussard and wife Linda, Steve Broussard, David Broussard and wife Lisa, Paul Broussard and wife Ann; her daughters, Lucille Smith, Susan Broussard, Johanna Landry and husband Tommy; grandchildren, Lanie Boyle and husband Patrick, Kallie Moneaux, Cory Broussard and wife Charlotte, Frank Hartwell and wife Maggie, Jeremy Broussard and wife Catherine, Mark Broussard, Jr. and wife Carolyn, Jenée Broussard and husband Marcus, Stephanie Cihlar and husband Dave, Jacob Broussard and wife Gabrielle, Andrew Broussard, Alexander Broussard, Joshua Dupre and wife Brandi, Mason Landry, Morgan Landry, Lucas Landry, Gabrielle Landry, Bailey Dore and Laura Dore; 22 great grandchildren; a sister, Nell Mazerole Durr; and special friend of over 60 years, Viola Boutte.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Emily Theresa Broussard; brothers, Alton Mazerole and Francis Mazerole; sisters, Eunice Mazerole Hobbie and Lillie Mazerole Viator; daughter-in-law, Lea Esponge Broussard; son-in-law, Richard Allen Smith; and the father of her children, John Gilton Broussard.

We would like to thank her dedicated caregivers, Debra Hill, who has been a loyal caregiver for the family for over 10 years, Mary Cole, Charlene Schaubert, Denise Kilchrist, Estelle Edmond, Brenda DeSoto, and Dianne Harrison; and the staff of Heart of Hospice for their endless kindness and compassion in caring for our mother.
