The family requests that visitation be observed on Friday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and continue on Saturday from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM. She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters: Sally Decoux Gary (Frank), Cheryl Decoux Doucet (Harold), Mona Decoux Pomier (Donald), Mary Catherine Cathy Decoux Pomier (Will); two sons: Mark Decoux (Sandy) and Brian Anthony Tony Decoux (Betsy); thirteen grandchildren: Jody Gary (Leyda), Jill Pratt (Randy), Tiffany Romero, Tyler Gary (Casey), Jared Doucet (Holly), Christopher Doucet (Kimmy), Jenn Huval (Duane), Brent Doucet (Gabrielle), Matthew Pomier (Chelsy), Russell Decoux (Tiffany), Erika Monte (Chance), Ashley Soileau (Sammy) and Amanda Decoux; fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. Decoux was preceded in death by her parents, Elus and Blanche R. Romero; her husband, Doris J. Decoux , two sisters, Hazel and Eucy Romero, and great grandson Darien Greenwood. While at a dancehall in Erath with her family, Laura met Doris Decoux who would become the love of her life, just after he returned home from having served in WWII. They married the same year and were later blessed with six children. Their family grew after they fostered for over ten years two orphaned nephews, Marshall Patrick Decoux (deceased) and Humphrey Clark Decoux. Laura embraced all aspects of her vocation as wife and mother while maintaining her focus on her Lord and Savior. With Doris assistance and support, Laura provided an orderly, secure and loving home abounding in chores that required the assistance of all members of the family. Thus, each child gained self-confidence in that ability to care for themselves and each other and left the family nest equipped with the ability to care for their own families. During those years, even while conscientiously caring for eight children and her husband, Laura managed to be very active in her Catholic Church Community, maintaining her membership in the Ladies Altar Society as well as devotion to Eucharistic Adoration. Additionally, she taught religion to elementary school students through the Diocesan CCD Program. It was only after Laura and Doris had completed the child-rearing phase of their marriage that they ventured into creating a more adventurous life for themselves. It was not unusual for these two lovebirds to enjoy Cajun dancing numerous times a week, thus connecting with their neighbors and newfound friends which led them to join the Cajun French Music Association (CFMA) as well as the Council on Aging. These associations enriched their lives just as much as Doris and Lauras vigor and good humor enriched the lives of those who knew them. Soon after Laura became a widow, she filled the void of losing her lifetime mate by joining the local Red Hat Society and was considered their Matriarch. There, she was embraced in the camaraderie of the beautiful ladies of that group, most of whom were classmates of her own daughters! The fruits of Lauras life can perhaps be best measured by the effect she had on others of which she was unaware: her beauty, inside and out, her humility and faith, her dedication to her vocation and her goodness. She lived her life motto: When someone is unkind to you, continue to be kind to them. Pallbearers will be Mark and Tony Decoux, Frank Gary, Harold Doucet and Donald and Will Pomier. The family expresses sincere appreciation for the compassionate care given by the staff of Hospice of Acadiana, in particular nurses Judith Stelly and Louise, social worker Javella Raheem, as well as Carolyn Fontenette, Melissa Paul, Marcie, Shannon, Germaine and others. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Lafayette, LA 70503. Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, New Iberia, LA, 70560, 337.365.3331, is in charge of the arrangements.
