Breaux Bridge - Funeral services will be held, Monday, February 15, 2010, 10:30 AM at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for Deacon Mr. Lawrence V. Jacobs, Jr. 77 who died on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 6:35 PM at his home. Entombment will follow at Saint Bernard #2 Mausoleum in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Father James Patrick Fallon, SSJ will be the celebrant for the Mass of Christian Burial, assisted by other clergy. Lawrence Valance Jacobs was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 29, 1932; he was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Breaux Bridge for 45 years. He was a loyal member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where he served in various capacities. He was ordained a deacon in 2000 and served as Deacon for almost ten (10) years. He gave freely of his time and served his Church and the Diocese of Lafayette, Saint Agnes Nursing Home, and Maison de Williams. He worked closely with the Diocese of Lafayette where he served as Chairperson and Co-Chairperson of the Bishops Services Appeal. Lawrence Jacobs was educated in the public schools of New Orleans, Louisiana: F.P. Ricard, Elementary; McDonald 35 High School; He is a graduate of Xavier University and Southern University. He has done further studies at USL, LSU, Holy Cross, and the University of Texas. He served his country in the U.S. Army SP4 from 1955-1957. He worked in the Saint Martin Parish Schools for over 30 years. He served in various capacities: science teacher, basketball coach, Vice-principal of Carver High School, Principal of Carver Elementary, Vice-principal of Breaux Bridge High and Breaux Bridge Junior High. He was among the first faculty members to integrate Breaux Bridge High School. Awards: Man of the Year - Health Planning Committee; Bishops Devoted Service Medal 2007, Martin Luther King, Jr. Award 2007 for Outstanding Service to Church and Community Current Memberships: ; Stewardship Committee, AARP Retired Teachers Association, Deacon Council Member of the Diocese of Lafayette, Member of the Board of Commissioners of Hospital Service District No. 2 Saint Martin Parish, Housing Authority of the Town of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana - Current President. Hobbies: Photography, art, travel, avid reader He gave freely to his Church, the Diocese, and his community. He loved spending time with his family and former students. Survivors include his wife, Melazie Vavasseur Jacobs of Breaux Bridge; two sons, Dr. Jarvis B. Jacobs of Murphy, Texas and Everett P. Jacobs of Centreville, Virginia; daughter-in-law (Everetts wife), Dr. Jennifer Hayes Jacobs, and four grandchildren: Kristina, Aaron, Daniel, and Christopher Jacobs all of Centreville, Virginia; one sister, Carolyn Forn of Denver, Colorado; one aunt-in-law, Sedonia Duffel of New Orleans, Louisiana; two brothers-in-law, Ulysses Vavasseur of Houston, Texas and Raymond Vavasseur and his wife Gloria Jean Vavasseur of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana; nephews, Marvin and Alan Forn, one niece, Nancy F. DAnielle, one grand niece, Kelly DAnielle, all of Denver, Colorado; a host of cousins, students, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Lawrence V. Jacobs, Sr. and Nellie Duffel Jacobs; grandparents, Leon Jacobs and Alice Ganier Jacobs, and Whelmon L. Duffel, Sr. and Aldonia Littleton Duffel; an uncle, Whelmon L. Duffel, Jr.; aunts and uncles, Edgar and Lena Fernandez and Tommy and Laura Carter; an aunt, Blanche Guilford of Dickinson, Texas. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 4:30 to 10 PM on Sunday February 14, 2010; and continue on Monday from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM on Sunday, February 14, 2010. Honored to serve as his pall bearers are his two sons, Dr. Jarvis B. Jacobs, Everett P. Jacobs, ; Raymond Vavasseur, Jr., David Vavasseur, Aaron Austin Jacobs, and Aaron Noel. Pellerin Funeral Home of Breaux Bridge is in charge of arrangements. We, the Jacobs family, thank God for giving our loved one seventy seven years of life, for fifty one years of marriage, a loving family, allowing to see his grand children, nurturing clergy, friends, neighbors and for students who showed love of neighbor.
