St. Martinville - Lillian Marie Barras Bernard, 93, a native and lifelong resident of St. Martinville passed away peacefully on July 6, 2013 after living a long and fulfilling life. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013, and continue on Tuesday at 7 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., at Pellerin Funeral Home in St. Martinville. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 pm on Monday.Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville with Msgr. Jeff DeBlanc officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville. Lillian was born on October 30, 1919, in Isle Labbe. She was married to Howard J. Bernard for 63 years when he passed away. They owned and operated Howard J. Bernard's Grocery and Market where they touched the lives of their neighbors, friends, and customers in their little corner grocery store for over 30 years. Lillian was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, and a 50 year member of the Catholic Daughters. Every Wednesday morning for many years Lillian along with her prayer partners Antonia Theriot and Josie Laughlin prayed in the Perpetual Chapel. She was a beloved wife, mother, and a 'MawMaw' who was loved and adored by her grandchildren. Her kindness, good cooking, and loving ways will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by a daughter, Lillian (Maurice) Oubre, Jr. of Baton Rouge, a son Burton (Meverly) Bernard, Sr., a daughter-in-law, Lona H. Bernard of New Iberia; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude B. Lancon and Shirley B. (Alfred)Fuselier; and four grandsons, Michael (Kiley) Bernard of Mandeville, John (Alice) Bernard of Baton Rouge, Brian M. Oubre of New York, NY, Burton (Danielle) Bernard, Jr. of St. Martinville; three granddaughters Maria Bernard (Chris) Reid of Baton Rouge, Leah Oubre (Grover) Robinson of Richmond, VA, Adelle Bernard (Norris) Guidry, Jr. of Rayne; and five great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons; and "Aunt Lil" to numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Howard J. Bernard; two sons, Raymond Bernard and Kenneth Bernard; her parents Jean Baptiste and Elodie Degetaire Barras, five sisters, Ruth Barras, Luce Barras, Lucette (Dewey) Broussard, Irene Barras, and Lydith Barras; two brothers, Antoine (Bob) Barras and Eddie Barras; a sister-in-law, Mary B. Theriot, and two brothers-in-law, Patrick Theriot, Sr. and Gilbert Lancon, Jr. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Lillian's caregivers, Mrs. Dorothy Robertson, Mrs. Julene Frederick, Mrs. Sandra Martin, and her AAA Hospice nurse, Mrs. Erica Simon for all the TLC extended to her in the last months of her life. Liturgy readers will be her granddaughters, Maria B. Reid and Adelle B. Guidry. Gift bearers will be her great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Bernard, John Bernard, Burt Bernard, Jr.,Brian Oubre, Chris Reid, Norris Guidry, Jr., and Luke Bernard.
