Mrs. Day was born in New Iberia to George Sigue Sr. and Lelia DeRouen. After graduating St. Edward High School in 1955, Mrs. Day attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Mrs. Day would then start a teaching career that spanned three decades. She moved to East Bloomfield, NY, in 1960 where she eventually retired from teaching after 34 years at Bloomfield Elementary School in 1995.
Mrs. Day was a woman of great strength and convictions with a passion for life and learning. In addition to her dedicated career in education, she was a supporter of girls athletics just as Title IX gained momentum. Mrs. Day was a student of the world and her interest in various cultures led her to travel both near and far. She traveled abroad frequently, including to Europe, Africa and just last year took a once in a lifetime trip to Cuba. Mrs. Day was also an avid collector of antiques and dolls and would often join friends on weekend trips to fuel her love of antiquing. Mrs. Day had many accomplishments but she was first and foremost a loving mother and grand-mother.
Mrs. Day is survived by her son Todd G. Day, his wife Kristin S. Black, MD of Fort Mill, South Carolina; her siblings George Sigue, Jr. and his wife Stephanie Sigue of San Francisco and Lelia Mae Pellerin and her husband Terry Pellerin, Sr. of Lafayette, Louisiana; two grandchildren An-drew and Kendall Day and many loving nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Lloyd Sigue, Clayton Sigue, Gabriel Lee Sigue and Elton Sigue.
Although she lived a great distance from New Iberia for much of her life, Mrs. Day was never far from home. It was her wish to rest in New Iberia. Her death brings great sadness to her family and friends. She will be, dearly, missed.
Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, New Iberia, LA 70560, 337.365.3331, is in charge of the arrangements.
