St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 19, 2023 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Madeline Francis Valsin, 84.

A visitation will take place at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville on Friday from 8:00 AM to 10:45 AM.

A rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM on Friday. 

Rev. Marvin Gyasie, S.V.D. will officiate at the Funeral Mass. The reader will be Ga'Laina Harris. Gift bearers will be Ma'Laina Robertson and Pe'Qualon Robertson.

Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery. 

Madeline Francis Valsin, formerly known as Madeline Mitchell, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Our Lady of Lourdes. She was born on March 19, 1939, in Lafayette to the late Wilson and Italia Ledet Mitchell. Madeline was joined in marriage to the late Adolph Francis, III and was blessed with nine beautiful children. After Adolph's passing, she remarried to Eugene Valsin, Jr. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. 

As much as we mourn her passing from this life, we are so grateful for the memories she has left us with. Over time we will come to manage our grief while carrying our memory of her with us always. Some of the highlights of Madeline's life were her dedication to both Notre Dame Catholic Church and St. Louis Catholic Church. She was a faithful member devoted to prayer and service throughout the years. She also enjoyed watching TV, listening to music, and attending parades with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These were times that brought her much joy.

Madeline's life was full of accomplishments that she cherished deeply. Perhaps the one that made her proudest was being a mother who loved and cared for her children endlessly. Her love extended beyond biological children to include step-children as well. While Madeline's passing has left a void in our lives that can never be filled, let us focus on how she touched our lives while she was present with us. We are forever indebted to her for who she was during her time with us. May Madeline rest in peace till we meet again.

Madeline is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Martin (Michael); sons, Alton Francis Sr., Nelson Francis, Melvin Francis (Kila), Eddie Francis, and Wilfred Francis (Conney); sister, Evelyn Ledet; step-sons, Clyde Valsin, Eugene Valsin III and Wallace Valsin; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents,  Wilson and Italia Ledet Mitchell; two of her sisters, Melba Jones and Mildred Mitchell; husbands Adolph Francis, III and Eugene Valsin Jr.; sons, Felton Francis and Edward Francis; daughter, Italia Ledet; grandchildren, Alton Francis Jr., Eddie Francis  Jr.,  Justin Francis, and Johnathan Nathaniel Orphe.

Pallbearers will be Nelson Francis, Shavar Francis, Michael Martin, Wilfred Francis, Joseph Ledet, and Stan Harris.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clayton Ledet, Melvin Francis, Alton Francis, Sr., Nelson Charles, Clifford Ledet, Clyde Valsin, Terrell Charles, Wilson Ledet, Terrence Celestine, Rico Francis, Eugene Valsin, III, Eddie Francis. Sr. and Wallace Valsin.

Today as we mourn the home-going of our loved one, we would like to express our deep appreciation for each expression of kindness shown to us through concern, prayers, or other acts of Christian kindness. Please continue to pray for us in this time of bereavement.
