New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Iberia for Margarette E. Kennedy, 79 who died Sunday, September 5, 2010 in New Iberia .
Entombment will follow in the Holy Family Mausoleum.
Msgr. Keith Derouen will be the Celebrant, and Rev. Charles Langlois will Con-Celebrate.
A native of New Iberia , Mrs. Kennedy was a 1946 graduate of Mt. Carmel Academy and of the Dominican College in New Orleans . She worked as a secretary in early years.
Devoted to her faith, she served the Church through adoration of the Blessed Sacrament weekly. She was also active in Fortnightly and Bridge clubs where she enjoyed cherished friendships. She loved traveling, entertaining and preparing the cuisine of her heritage for family and friends. Mrs. Kennedy had a special gift of appreciating beauty as reflected in the home that she created. She will be remembered as ever gracious and loving in the lives of her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Christine Word and husband Duke of Lafayette, Sammy Kennedy and wife Becky of New Iberia, Helaine Dunbar and husband Gerald of Lafayette, Lois Melancon and husband Andy of Houston; sisters, Elaine Thomas and Mae Helen Ackal both of Lafayette; 13 grandchildren, Keith Word, Eric Word, Colin Word, Carmen Word, Camille Word Simoneaux all of the Lafayette area, Christine Dunbar Barber of Denham Springs, Paul Dunbar of Lafayette, Mark Dunbar of Broussard, Lauren Melancon of New Orleans, Brett Melancon of Mandeville, Ben Melancon of Baton Rouge, Caroline Doerle and Avery Doerle both of New Iberia; 13 great grandchildren; and dear nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Sam J. Kennedy; an infant son, Patrick; her mother, Nazira Elias, a brother, Harold Elias, and her father, Elias Elias.
Pallbearers will be Keith Word, Eric Word, Colin Word, Paul Dunbar, Mark Dunbar, Brett Melancon, Ben Melancon, Avery Doerle, Mitch Ackal, and Gabe Ackal.
A gathering of family and friends will be Tuesday from 4:30 PM until 8:00 PM at Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd , in New Iberia . A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM .
