Parks - A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, May 24, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parks, for Martin "Mert" J. Baker, 54, who passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at his residence. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm on Thursday and continue at 8:00 am until 1:15 pm on Friday. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Thursday. Msgr. Curtis Mallet will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Suzanne Laviolette and Darlene Baker. Gift Bearers will be Emily Angelle and Molly Angelle. Music will be provided by Richard Baker, Jr. Martin, known to many by his nickname 'Mert,' was a stay-at-home dad to his only son, Leland. He enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends and building woodcrafts. He was so proud to know that Leland, his pride and joy, graduated from Breaux Bridge High on May 17, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Telicia 'Lisa' Angelle Baker of Parks; his son Leland Jude Baker of Parks; his sister, Betty Laviolette and her husband Edward of Parks; his three brothers, Richard (Darlene) Baker, Jr., of Loreauville; Tony Baker of St. Martinville; and Herman (Billie) Theriot of Rayne; and his canine companion, Oreo. He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Baker Sr. and Josephine Melancon Baker; and his sisters, Helen (Robert) Badeaux and Theresa (Courtland) Delahoussaye. The family would like to express their special thanks to: Dr. Khorsandi, Hospice Compassus, Cancer Center of Acadiana at Lafayette General Medical Center, and their staffs, his nurse Margret Kennison, and a 'special thanks' to our Angel on Earth, Susan Thibodeaux. Pallbearers will be Leland Jude Baker, Jody Angelle, Denton Angelle, Mayo Baker, Herman Theriot, and Kirk Laviolette. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby LeBlanc, Robert Paul Badeaux, Mark Laviolette, and Josh Laviolette. Pellerin Funeral Home of Breaux Bridge is in charge of arrangements.
