St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Mazel Washington Sam, 89, who passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the Notre Dame from 7:00 am until 10:45 am on Saturday.
A rosary will be prayed at 8:30 am on Saturday.
Rev. Abelardo Gabriel SVD will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Mazel Washington Sam was born on July 2, 1931, in Arnaudville, Louisiana, to Pierre and Alberta Johnson Washington. She was the youngest of six children. On January 20, 1956, Mazel was united in holy matrimony to Roy Sam. To this loving union, five children were born. Mazel was always faithful to God and to her church, Notre Dame Catholic Church. She was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court #54 in St. Martinville for 44 years, a member of the 4th Degree Lady of Grace St. Paul Chapter #3 in Lafayette, Louisiana, a member of the Altar Ladies Society and a dedicated member of the Legion of Mary for many years. Mazel was a member of the Notre Dame Senior Choir for many years. She had the honor of singing at the Canonization of Saint Arnold Janssen on October 5, 2003, in Rome, Italy. She was also a member of the 100 Voices Choir of the Diocese of Lafayette and of the Associates of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. She became a member of Cursillo Movement in 1997.
She enjoyed sewing, singing, baking, crocheting, and doing word searches. Mazel loved being with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Ronald) Landry; two sons, Floyd Sam and Ervin (Melanie) Sam; ten grandchildren, Kellen (Louvenia) Landry, Erica Lawrence, Phylicia Landry, Kyler Sam, Rayniece Simon, Lakeiya Simon, Brison Simon, Beyonce Jackson, Melanna Sam and Dwayne Jackson; and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Sam; father, Pierre Washington; mother, Alberta Washington; son, Gregory Sam; daughter, Andrea Simon; grandchild, Hanidra Batiste; sister, Nellie Washington; and four brothers, Wanis Washington, Whitney Washington, Clifton Washington, and Leroy Washington.
Pallbearers will be Kellen Landry, Leon Narcisse, Matthew Narcisse, Brison Simon, Byron Washington, and Richard Washington.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ronald Landry, Allen Francois, Lawrence Sam, Christopher Francois, Calvin Narcisse, and John Francois.
