She was two years late in starting first grade until a law was passed in the mid-20's that all children must attend school. That made her older than most of her classmates. She excelled at school plays, dancing, and singing. She lost her mother at twelve years of age and went to live with her Aunt Virginia and Uncle Jack in Coteau Holmes. At that very young age, she had to get up at 3 am to help her uncle gather moss off trees for sale. That was the beginning of a long list of humble jobs mostly working in the factory canning seasonal crops, crawfish, the Fruit of the Loom clothing plant to making microwave oven components. Always industrious and frugal, she would provide hot French bread and transportation to other workers. At 85, she was still working caring for elderly people. She spent her life devoted to her children enjoying family gatherings where she cooked Saturday meals for all to attend. Of the many things she taught them was the love of God and family, mostly by her example. Odile loved life and the pleasure of having her family around her. She was meticulous and neat in her appearance and would not go outside her door without lipstick, matching coordinates, and jewelry. She loved winning at cards, Bingo, Pokeno, and going to the casino. She loved singing the country and western songs of long ago, as well as, French classics where she would volunteer to sing. She also loved the outdoors and spent much time planting flowers and doing her own yard work. She loved animals and always had a pet "something" around. She and Waldo loved horses and were members of the Teche Riding Club. They participated in camping and trail rides and even rode in the downtown Houston rodeo. She was amazingly creative and could fashion or fix just about anything she needed with grey duct tape and pliers.
She is survived by her sons, Harold H. Borel and wife Velma Guidry Borel, Waldo J. Borel, Jr. and wife Gloria Guidry Borel, Warren J. Borel, Sr. and wife Cathy Benoit Borel, and Byron J. Borel and wife Karen Lasseigne Borel, all of Catahoula; daughters, Verna Mae Hebert and husband Sidney J. Hebert III of New Iberia, Wanda Thibodeaux and husband Patrick E.
