Patricia Segura

October 24, 1926 — March 3, 2017

Patricia (Pat) Segura peacefully passed away on March 3, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 6, 2017 at Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Teche in New Iberia with internment at Holy Family Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday March 5th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with rosary at 6:30 p.m., and again Monday March 6th from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, she grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Lafayette High School class of 1944. With her twin sister, she attended Texas Womens University where she earned a degree in journalism with a minor in music. After college, she returned to New Iberia where she met and married Huey F. Segura. During their 54-year marriage the couple lived in VA during Hueys military career, returned to New Iberia and from 1962-73 lived in Abbeville. A job transfer brought the family to Houston, TX for 8 years, then they were able to return to New Iberia in 1981. During their stay in VA, she utilized her journalism degree as a writer and eventually editor of Army Training Publications at the transportation school in Fort Eustis, VA. Upon return to New Iberia, she worked as managing editor at the Daily Iberian where she wrote and edited stories in the local paper. Once in Abbeville, she and Huey raised 3 children: Huey Jr., Virginia, and Amelia (better known as Chopper, Ginger, and Mia). Her love for music led her to teach piano in her home for 8 years. Always surrounded by a close-knit group of friends, her involvement in the Abbeville Fort Knightly Club, where she held many offices, as well as Sewing Club, Music Society, and many other civic and social organizations strengthened those friendships. While in Houston she took up tennis, traveled with family, and rekindled her passion for journalism as she worked as a writer for a small literary company for 3 years. She also spent much of her time enjoying needlepoint and reading. In 1981, an opportunity to return home to New Iberia was quickly acted upon. After returning to New Iberia, she reactivated her memberships in the Abbeville Fort Knightly Club, Friends of the Shadows, was a writer and editor of the annual Shadows of the Teche Cookbook, and played in a weekly bridge game. In 1986, once Huey retired, he and Pat enjoyed 15 years of motor homing throughout the country and abroad. They were members of 3 motor home groups. A new group of friends was found at local camp outs and travel excursions. Their motor homing came to an end when Huey fought a 3-year battle with cancer, and died in 2003. Later in life, she married life-long friend, Silas B. Cooper of Abbeville. Married only 14 months, Silas died of heart complications. Throughout her life Pat was passionate about family, friends, music, and journalism. She was always part of the social scene maintaining an active lifestyle, hosting and attending many parties, and sharing her knowledge of the community and her music and journalism talents writing for the Acadiana Profile and singing with Les Sons du Teche choral group. She lived her life to the fullest sharing her passions with friends and family alike. Miss Patricias family would like to thank the staffs of Garden View Assisted Living, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospice, and All Care for their attentive services.
