Rynella - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at St. Marcellus Catholic Church in Rynella, for Phillip James Barras, 73, who passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Entombment will follow in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church Cemetery in Coteau. Rev. James Nguyen will be the Celebrant, and Rev. Eugene Treme will be the Con-Celebrant. A gathering of family and friends will be at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Friday, and will continue on Saturday from 8:00 am until 10:15 am. A rosary, led by the Men's Rosary Group, will be prayed at 7:00 pm on Friday. Phillip James Barras was born in Iberia Parish on March 15, 1945 to the late Sidney and Lorena Reaux Barras. His 48 year career at Cargill Deicing Technology showed his versatility at many jobs from Package Loader to Hoist Operator before he retired in 2013. Phillip was an active member of Woodmen of the World, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Marcellus Catholic Church. He was always active in both church and community, and helped anyone with anything before it was asked of him. Phillip loved his family without restrictions, and spending time with them was his favorite past time. While his three sons were growing up, he was baseball and football coach to their teams, and leader of their Woodmen of the World camping trips and activities. When the grandkids came along, he told them silly jokes they could understand, and he laughed the loudest when they got them. Whether it was watching cowboy movies or Saints football with the love of his life, Lula, drinking coffee and visiting with his siblings, cooking gumbo for his grandkids, or flinging his dance partner around at a grandchild's wedding, it was all done with the love that was Pop. What do you call a bear with no teeth? We'll wait for the answer, Pop, until we see you again. Mr. Barras is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lula Viator Barras; sons, Scott (Paula) Barras of New Iberia, Chuck (Angela) Barras of Chapin, SC, and Steven Barras and fiancee' Elizabeth Olivier of New Iberia; sisters, Elina East and Isabelle "Sue" Credeur of New Iberia, Alberta Dore of Parks, Mona (Perry) Leleux of New Iberia, and Mary (Emile) Lebouef of Abbeville; a brother, Roland (Mitzi) Barras of New Iberia; grandchildren, Tyler Barras and girlfriend, Lawren Thorne, Sydni Barras and boyfriend, Kirk Crochet, Andrea (Kody) Sheroan, Nicholas Barras, Amanda Bise, Justin Bise, Blake Bise, Brittany Barras, Cameron Barras, Samantha Trail and boyfriend, Austin Menard; a great grandchild, Brantley Bise; sisters-in-law, Gloria Barras of New Iberia, Lois Barras of Lafayette, and Audrey Barras of Henry; and godchildren, Patty (Morgan) Green of Youngsville and Karl Malcombe of Lafayette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John L.B. Barras, Ullis "Shorty" Barras, Wade Barras, and Paul "Lil Pitt" Demas Barras; brothers-in-law, Irving East, Delvin Credeur, Jun Dore, and Ray P. Viator; great granddaughter, Alana Bradham, godchild, Roland "Rod" Barras, Jr.; and his parents-in-law, Xavier and Lula Mae Landry Viator.
