Delcambre - Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church in Delcambre for Phillip Wilmer Bernard, 74, who passed away at 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at Lafayette General Medical Center, after a four year battle with cancer.
Entombment will follow at Our Lady of the Lake Mausoleum in Delcambre.
Fr. Herbert Bennerfield will officiate the services.
Mr. Bernard, the son of the late Joseph "Pete" Bernard and Lillian Comeaux Bernard, was a native of Delcambre. He was a member of St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, where he served as Trustee of the parish Pastoral Council and a member of the St. Joseph Society. He was honored and recognized by the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, Cathedral of St. John, with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for his outstanding service to church and community in January of 2006.
Mr. Bernard worked in Jefferson Island at the salt mine until the collapsing of the salt mine. He then changed his career path and entered into the oilfield where he worked as a service technician for Derrick Equipment Company for 20 years until his retirement in 2004.
Phillip enjoyed his life to the fullest. He loved to Zydeco dance; attend trail rides, and most of all, playing with his grandchildren. He worshiped his family.
He leaves the gift of love, faith, patience and courage to his loving wife, of 52 years, Otherea Huntsberry Bernard; one son, Glenn Bernard and his wife, Rhonda Tauriac Bernard, of Grand Marais; one daughter, Lynette Bernard-Sigue and her husband, Gabriel Sigue, Jr., of New Iberia; four grandchildren, Casey Bernard, Alexis Bernard, Ja Lyn Sigue, and Phillip Sigue; two brothers, Preston Bernard and Murphy Bernard, both of Beaumont, TX; one sister, Maisie Sandiford, of Westbury, NY; eight sisters-in-law, Gladys Washington Bernard, of Beaumont, TX, Eva Ann Louis, Doris Jean Huntsberry, Annie V. Huntsberry, Doris P.T. Huntsberry, all of Abbeville, Helen Segura, of Lafayette, Joyce Turnley and Theresa Baptiste, both of Baton Rouge, and Ella Mae Reaux, of Delcambre; four brothers-in-law, J.C. Huntsberry, Elmo Huntsberry and Herman Huntsberry, all of Abbeville, Herman Segura, of Lafayette, and Richard Turnley, of Baton Rouge; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph "Pete" Bernard; his mother, Lillian Comeaux Bernard; and one sister, Marilyn Bernard Henderson Landry.
Pallbearers will be Al Bernard, Allen Landry, Leonard Blackwell, Andrew Reaux, Keith Huntsberry, and Anthony Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gabriel Sigue, Jr., Casey Bernard, Edward Moore, Robert Comeaux, J.C. "Bobby" Huntsberry, Elmo Huntsberry, Herman Huntsberry, Herman Segura, Richard Turnley, Murphy Bernard, Preston Bernard, L.J. Schello, Albert Tony Boyance, Michael Huntsberry, Richard Landry, Floyd Landry, Curley Reaux, Jr., Joseph Preston Bernard, Stanley Mouton, Sylvester George, Walter Trahan, Jr., Ernest Comeaux, and John Nezey, Sr.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church from 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2007 and continue until time of service.
A rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
