Catahoula - A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2023, 1:00 pm at St. Rita Catholic Church for Pierre Clifton Theriot, 93, who passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, March 25th, at St. Rita's from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
A rosary will be recited at 12:30 PM by a family friend.
Rev. Bill Melancon will officiate at the Memorial Service.
Pierre was a humble man and came from humble beginnings. He was born prematurely in a raging ice storm on December 15, 1929. It was the only time Catahoula Lake froze over. His mother, Angela, grandmother, Carmelite, and aunt, Monique, made sure he survived by putting his tiny body in a shoebox covered with cotton & taking turns holding him next to the fireplace to keep him incubated.
Pierre grew up on a farm in his young life and worked in the sugar cane fields when cane was cut by hand with a cane knife and not by tractors. His hard work ethic continued into his adulthood. He was an excellent provider for our family, making sure we were housed, fed, clothed, and had some fun and memorable times together.
Pierre was a Jack of All Trades and, most notably, became a self-accomplished mechanic and electrician. He wired many new houses and solved electrical problems for many people and would not charge them a dime for his time.
Gardening was one of Pierre's passions. He loved to till the soil, plant seeds, nurture, and harvest his vegetable crops. For decades he had gardens that provided fresh vegetables almost year-round. He always shared the excess with family, neighbors, and friends.
In his spare time, Pierre loved watching football, college and pros, and playing Bourré. He loved to listen and dance to French Cajun music, otherwise known as chanky-chank music in Cajun country. He listened to old-time country & western music and loved old-time westerns. He was a big fan of Branson, MO and made several trips there to enjoy what Branson had to offer. He traveled to Nova Scotia to expand his knowledge of our Cajun ancestry and heritage.
Pierre was married to the love of his life, Iva Mae, for 73 years and had 4 children, Katie, Nan, Floyd, and SueSue. He was incredibly proud of his marriage and life with our mom, his children, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He valued and emphasized the importance of education and a good work ethic to get by in this life. Consequently, his children and grandchildren did well in school, college, and/or the careers they chose for themselves. He could not have been prouder of their accomplishments.
Pierre, you are loved and you will be missed. Sleep in heavenly peace.
Our family wishes to extend our sincerest thanks to Hospice of Acadiana, especially Pierre's exceptional nurse, Katie Cormier; his caretakers, Mary Wiltz, Sandra Jean Baptist, Shariffia Williams, Andrea Huval, Amanda Tate, Stephanie Lasseigne, Dickey Vicknair, & Misty Melancon for their dedication and excellence in caring for Pierre; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, and Brenda, his niece, for their absolute and unwavering love and support, and their many contributions. Everyone has gone above and beyond, and we could not be more grateful.
He is survived by his wife, Iva Mae Theriot; daughters, Katherine "Katie" Theriot , Marlene "Nan" Laviolette, Sue Ellen "Sue Sue" (Ricky) Vincent; brothers, Joseph David "Shine" (Annie) Theriot, Dudley "Cheese" (Anna) Theriot, Howard (Johnell) Theriot, and Jackie (Sue) Theriot; sisters, Maria (Sis) Bonin and Sylvia "Sive" Borel; grandchildren, Lacey (Richard) McCarthy, Ross Noel, Todd (Gabby) Noel, Haley Vincent, and Hannah Vincent' and five great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvain and Angela Blanchard Theriot; son, Floyd Joseph Theriot; son-in-law, Chris Laviolette; sister, Gloria Blanchard; and his brother, Patrick Theriot.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Ste. 200, Lafayette, LA 70503, or to a favorite charity of your choice.
