Rose was born September 14, 1931, to George and Harriet Benoit Alexander. She joined in matrimony with Marshall Lewis and from this union 10 children were born.  She resided and raised her children in St. Martinville. She was employed with the St. Martin Parish School Board District for over 32 years. Rose was a faithful parishioner of Notre Dame Catholic Church and was a public servant for the Lord. She was a pillar to her community. If any event was being put on or if anyone was in need, she and her family would volunteer their time to help. She instilled hard work, compassion, family values in her children and planted those seeds with them so that they could pass those same values to their family. Rose was awarded and recognized with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award on both a parish and diocesan level for her service to the church and community.

Her love for her family was immense. She was the matriarch to her whole family being that she was the last living of her siblings. She was a confidant to many and always led with great example. Rose was a regal and refined lady who enjoyed the nicer things in life. She worked hard, being a full-time employee, mother, and landlord. She graciously was able to provide affordable living to many tenants. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, volunteering, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Theresa Pickney Lewis, Mary L. Hardy (Edward J. Hardy, Jr.), Jerrie Jones, Bertha Collins (Joseph Collins), Margaret Berard (Norbert Berard, Jr.), Geneva M. Lewis, Lucille Boudreaux (Phillip Boudreaux) and Ronald Lewis (Geraldine Lewis); grandchildren, Deanna Hardy-Joseph, Harold Pickney, Jr., Darlene Lewis, Tiffiane M.
