Sarah Spencer Scurria, age 93, passed away Monday, April 29 at Azalea Estates in New Iberia, LA. Sarah was born to Rufo Hawthorne Spencer and Della Stokes Spencer on September 25, 1919 in Simsboro, Louisiana. She proudly earned her Bachelors Degree in Education from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA. While at LA Tech, she met the man that would become her husband of over 53 years, Phil J Scurria. Upon their marriage they happily called Tallulah, LA their home, where she spent many joyful years doing what she loved, teaching elementary school children and raising a family of her own. After losing Phil to his battle with cancer, Sarah ultimately made the brave decision to sadly leave her home of Tallulah to be closer to her family in New Iberia, LA. Devoted to her family Sarah is survived by her son Phillip J Scurria Jr MD and wife Marty, of New Iberia, LA and her daughter, Nan Scurria Robinson and husband Herb of Fresno, TX. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren - Karen Scurria Shannon and husband Patrick of Mandeville, LA, Anthony Scurria and wife Brandy of Slidell, LA, Bronwen Mathis of Carrolltan, TX, Stephen Scurria and wife Dana of New Iberia, LA, Spencer Mathis of Fresno, TX, Laura Scurria Miller and husband Nick of Nashville, TN, and Allison Scurria, of New Orleans, LA - and 10 great grandchildren Madeline, Abigail, Emma Katherine & Audrey Shannon, Austin & Emily Scurria, Lilli & Jayden Mathis, and Sophia & Watson Miller. As per her wishes, Sarah's body has been donated to LSU Health Sciences Center. A private Mass will be celebrated in her memory at a later date. Heartfelt thanks are sent to those who lovingly cared for Sarah in her last years - her incredibly kind and compassionate caregivers Elaine, Laura, Rosemary and Wendy.
