St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Sylvia Marie Castillo, 72, who passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2020, at .
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Notre Dame Catholic Church from 7:00 am until 11:00 am.
A rosary will be prayed at 8:30 am on Saturday.
Rev. Abelardo Gabriel SVD will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Readers will be Kathleen Berard Filer and Sheridan Mitchell. Gift Bearers will be Madison Noel, Kyran Bourda, and Calem Mitchell.
Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Sylvia was a parishioner of Notre Dame Catholic Church and a member of the Parish Council, Trinity Catholic School Board, Lecturer at Notre Dame Catholic Church, and the Baptism Team. She was a 4th degree Saint Paul Chapter #3, Ladies of Grace, and the Grand Lady of Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court #54 in St. Martinville. She was a teacher for 45 years at St. Martinville Primary and Parks Middle School. Sylvia enjoyed playing bingo and watching game shows on TV. She loved to mentor children and spend quality time with her family. Sylvia will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her companion, Louis Wiltz; son, Kendrick (Charmane) Bergeron of Kathleen, GA; sister, Mae Audrey (Curley) Hypolite of Houston, TX; Half Sister, Annabell Reed of Seattle, WA; uncle, Hildred Durand; aunt Zenora Durand; and five Godchildren, Yolanda Sonnier, Craig Alexander, Cheria Noel, Dawn Charles, and Francine Durand.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Princley and Loina Berard Durand; two husbands, James Bergeron and Mathew Castillo; sister, Mary Ann Charles; nephew, Jeremy Charles; two nieces, Sandra Charles and Phyllis Taylor Hypolite; two mothers-in-law, Gladys Charles and Lydia Castillo; brother-in-law, Lawrence Charles; and Godchild, Eddie Carmouche.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Lewis, Ronald Drake, Raymond Noel, Alfred Jones, Robert Drake, and Tristan Noel.
