Breaux Bridge - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge for Ulysses Batiste, Jr., 63, who passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019, at the Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 4:30 pm until 10:00 pm on Friday and continue on Saturday at 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 pm on Friday. Rev. Garrett McIntyre will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Reader will be Chantelle Prejean. Gift bearers will be Samantha Matthews and Briana Matthews. Interment will follow at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Breaux Bridge. Ulysses retired as a coach at Breaux Bridge Junior High. He enjoyed watching all Breaux Bridge and LSU sports, Saints football, and going to the horse races. He was a parishioner of St. Bernard Catholic Church and served as an usher there. Ulysses was well-known throughout the community and was known for his love of Breaux Bridge. He was a proud native. Ulysses' smile and loving personality will be dearly missed. He is survived by his father, Ulysses Batiste, Sr.; sons, Tyrone Matthews and Keith Matthews; daughters, Tamisha Matthews, Julia Matthews, and Chantelle Prejean; step daughter, Rashawnda Prejean; step son, Lennis Prejean; brothers, Herbert Batiste (Dorothy), Jimmy Batiste (Jennifer), Robert Batiste, Richard Batiste, and David Batiste (Sylvia); sisters, Shelia Batiste and Roxanne Celestine; step sisters, Elizabeth Celestine, Stacey Barras, and Beverly Williams; step brothers, Kenneth Williams and Ulysses Barras; grandchildren, Ketria Matthews, Brianna Matthews, Chestly Clay, Wilbert Alex, Jr., Zhane Matthews, and Carmen Houston; step grandchildren, Don''Travin Batiste, Javon Batiste, and Jax Batiste; and one great grandchild, Kay'con Matthews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vedia Mae Batiste; maternal grandparents, Allen and Lilly Mae Celestine, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Oscar and Augustine Mitchell; brother, Randy Batiste; and stepsister, Betty Williams. Pallbearers will be Herbert Batiste, Jimmy Batiste, Robert Batiste, David Batiste, Ronald Sam, and Harvey Celestine. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyrone Matthews, Keith Matthews, Lennis Prejean, Richard Batiste, Kenneth Williams, Ulysses Barras, Earl Sam, Shelton Joseph, Cameron Houston, Daniel Derousselle Sr., Larry Celestine, and Sidney Williams.
