Baldwin - Ut Thi Weaver, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2020, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Born in the beautiful country of Vietnam on January 1, 1929, she devoted her life to raising a robust family of five daughters and two sons. Together with her second late husband, Mitchell Weaver who served as a contractor for the United States Department of Defense, the entire family evacuated from her beloved country and relocated to America and resettled into Portland, Oregon in May of 1975. Along with several of her children she moved to Louisiana in 1992 and continued to live between Lafayette and New Orleans.
Ut was a mathematical genius despite her limited formal education; one of her daughters remembered how ‘Momma’ can calculate a 15-year and 30-year mortgage payments by using paper and pencil. Her attempt at learning English was to break down the words phonetically and along with her sharp memory, Ut obtained her U.S. Citizenship on August 5, 1994 without language assistance.
Ut’s full life of many celebrations included an expansive family of fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Her number one joy was being with her ever growing family. With most of her children as daughters, then came more ‘girls’ as granddaughters, she was ecstatic when the first grandson was born. Her grandchildren would remember their grandma, standing at about 4’ 8”, as a giant with the deep hugs she gave them. Grandma’s hugs seem like they went on forever.
Ut’s children remember their Mom as a role model of hard work, commitment to her faith and coming out of many challenges stronger than before. She is the central reason for the countless family get-together and all of us will deeply miss her.
Ut is preceded in death by husbands Nguyen Van Nguyen and Mitchell Weaver, and her son Nghia Nguyen. Ut is survived by her children, Lien Nguyen, Thanh Hoang, Tinh Tran, Kim Tran, Barbara Weaver and Robert Weaver along with their respective spouses, children and grandchildren.
