A long-time resident of Breaux Bridge, Velma made lasting friendships and memories throughout her life. She married her beloved husband, Wilfred Poirier and together they spent 49 happy years building a life and home. Before becoming a full-time homemaker, Velma was employed for 16 years with The Saint Martin Parish School Board.

Velma found joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life. She was a loyal follower of the news, always staying connected to the world around her. Every Friday, Velma would gather her loved ones for a meal—a tradition that filled their home with love, laughter, and her favorite pink cookies. Yet, it was her family that remained her greatest source of joy. Affectionately called “Mom mom”, as her family grew to include grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Velma’s life was a testament to the values of love, kindness, and family togetherness. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her sons, Larry (Gail) Poirier, Gerald "T.J." (Pam) Poirier, Kenneth “T-Ken” (Kim) Poirier, Randy “Tublanc” (Shelly) Poirier, and Terry “PeeWee” (Sharon) Poirier; daughters, Becky (Scott) Haydel and Susan Johnson; brother, Steve Huval; grandchildren, Scottie, Megan, Paxton, Sandy, Lacy, Kristie, Natasha, Keisha, Khloe, Jason, Sherry, Tara and Alexis; 21 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred “Loon” Poirier; parents, Clodis and Anita Guidry Huval; brothers, Ernest, Roland, and Paul Huval; sisters, Loula Mae Delahoussaye, Lois Blanchard, Mable Boyer, and Georgia Delahoussaye; son-in-law, Matt Johnson; and a great-grandchild, McKenna Poirier.

Pallbearers will be all of her sons, and Scott Haydel, her son-in-law.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scottie and Jason Poirier and Paxton Haydel.
