Funeral services have been set for Mrs. James Ivy Louviere, 91, the former Volna Mary Landry, for Thursday, the twenty-second day of April, two thousand ten, beginning at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church in New Iberia, Louisiana. Celebrant at the Mass of Christian burial will be the Reverend Gary Schexnayder, pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church in Crowley and a longtime friend of the family. Entombment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery and Mausoleums.
Visitation hours will be held from three to eight p.m. on Wednesday, the twenty-first day of April, with a rosary to be said beginning at six p.m. at Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, in New Iberia. Visitation continues on Thursday morning from eight a.m. until nine thirty a.m.
A native of Breaux Bridge and Baton Rouge and a longtime resident of New Iberia until her move to Carencro several years ago to live next door to one of her daughters, Mrs. Louviere died a peaceful death at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette after a short illness on Sunday, April the eighteenth, at 3:50 p.m.
She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Edythe and Henry Martin of Eunice, Susan and Robert Hubbard of Destrehan, and Deborah and Jay Alexius of Carencro; and a sister, Mrs. Lawrence Barras, Sr. (Dottie), who resides in St. Martinville.
In addition, Mrs. Louviere leaves behind her granddaughter, Lois Martin Stagg, Lafayette; grandsons Blake Patout and Luke Alexius, both of Carencro; and Jon, Brent, Kade, and Eric Alexander, all of Destrehan. Also surviving are her great-granddaughter, Lane Stagg of Lafayette; and great-grandsons Damien, Maddox, Logan, and Brodie Alexander, Destrehan; and two step-grandchildren, Jay Alexius, Jr., and Caroline Alexius Alexius of Houma ; and three step-great-grandsons, Alex, Nicholas, and Tate, Jr. A host of nieces, nephews, and great- and great-great nieces and nephews also survive Mrs. Louviere.
Born on September 26, 1918, she was the third of five children (two older, brothers and two younger sisters) of Euclide and Edith Thibodeaux Landry of St. Martin Parish. Mrs. Louviere attended grammar and high school in Baton Rouge and Breaux Bridge. Following her graduation from Breaux Bridge High School in 1934, she attended Southwest Louisiana Institute in Lafayette (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where she majored in business and later became a Notary Public commissioned by the State of Louisiana . As one is never too old to learn, while in her 50s, Volna Louviere enrolled as a business major at what is now known as Teche Area Technical College in New Iberia, and completed a Stenographic Course in 1978.
Mrs. Louviere was preceded in death by her husband, James Ivy Louviere; one infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Louviere; her parents; two brothers: Andrew Landry and Ralph Landry; and one sister, Ms. Elizabeth (Betty) Landry Fisher.
During the many years that she lived in New Iberia, Mrs. Louviere was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was active in the Mothers' Club of Mt. Carmel Academy, where she was the Chairperson of the Library Memorial Fund. She also served as President of the Lions Club Auxiliary and was a member of Epsilon Epsilon Alpha Sorority
