Breaux Bridge A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, March 31, 2014, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, for Walter Henry Broussard, 81, who passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014 at his residence in Breaux Bridge.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, and continue on Monday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Pellerin Funeral Home in Breaux Bridge. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday by Deacon Tim Maragos.
Fr. Joseph Campion, will officiate the funeral mass. Concelebrants will be Fr. Donald Pelous, Fr. Flo Calais and Fr. Paul Patin. Gift bearers will be Sarah Christopher, Aimee' Christopher and Colleen Broussard.
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2 in Breaux Bridge.
Mr. Broussard served in the Army during the Korean War as a Chaplain Assistant, Company Clerk and a French Linguist.
After graduating from the University Of Houston Pharmacy School in June, 1958 and marrying his loving wife, Rita, his first employment as a Pharmacist was in Erath, LA. After 3 years in Erath, he then became employed by Patin Pharmacy in 1961 located in Breaux Bridge, LA for 8 years. He then purchased the Pharmacy and served the community until his retirement in 1999.
Walter served his community at his retail pharmacy and Gary Memorial Hospital for over 45 years.
As a native of Maurice, LA and now a citizen of Breaux Bridge, he became active in both civic and religious affairs.
As a devout Catholic he served his church in various ways, with his love for singing he helped organize the beautiful St. Bernard Church Choir of the 70s in which he sang often times as a soloist. He was also the first lector at St. Bernard Church and was a 27 year member of the Perpetual Adoration Group at St. Bernard Church. He was a member of the Breaux Bridge Knights of Columbus 2398 and a recipient of the 50 year KC award. He and his wife were members of the committee to renovate the interior of St. Bernard Catholic Church. He also served as a member of the St. Bernard Elementary School Board for a number of years.
As a civic minded person, Walter served as President of the Breaux Bridge Merchants Association until its demise when the Breaux Bridge Chamber of Commerce was organized. He then served as a member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce in its early years. Walter also served as chairman of the Breaux Bridge Housing Authority for many years and was a member of the Breaux Bridge Parks and Recreation Committee during the major development of Parc Hardy. He and his wife were active in the Crawfish Festival in its early years, helping in the introduction of the Bayou Parade.
He was a member of Woodmen of the World, Lions Club, Teurlings Catholic Boosters, American Legion and the Lafayette Area Pharmacist.
Walter belonged to a large family of 10 children and was proud of organizing a reunion that included his brothers, sisters, spouses, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren each New Years day for over 50 years in Breaux Bridge. The family celebrated with singing, good food and fond memories.
Walter loved hunting with his sons and grandsons and working in his yard, alongside his loving wife, who always kept a beautiful yard. He loved sports, especially his beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
After his retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the United States and Canada. He was an amateur artist and loved photography.
Most of all Walter loved his family and was very proud of them.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rita Rae Buller Broussard of Breaux Bridge; his sons, Dr. Craig Broussard and his wife, Merle of Lake Charles and Dr. Richard K. Broussard and his wife, Kim of Lafayette; his daughter, Susan Christopher and her husband, Dr. Neil Christopher of Tullahoma, Tennessee; his brothers, Wallace Broussard and his wife, Doris and Willie Broussard all of Maurice; his sisters, Gladys Trahan of Maurice, Alice Schroder and her husband, Johnny and Faye Prejean all of Beaumont, Texas; his grandchildren, Dr. Tyler Broussard and his wife, Ashley, Catherine Broussard, Paul Broussard, Lindsey Broussard, Kent Broussard, Colleen Broussard, Clay Broussard, Sarah Christopher and Aimee' Christopher,
He was preceded in death by his parents, Camille and Ada Broussard; his brothers, Edward Broussard, Dr. Lastie Broussard and John Broussard; and his sister, Doris Dartez.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Tyler Broussard, Paul Broussard, Kent Broussard, Clay Broussard, Paul Edward Broussard and Steve Buller.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Thibodeaux, Maurice Broussard, Dr. Neil Christopher, Wallace Broussard, Willie Broussard, Jerome Buller, Dr. Daniel Buller, Charles Buller and the Breaux Bridge Knights of Columbus 2398,
