St. Martinville - Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for Wilbert "Neg" Poirier, 77, who passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Iberia General Medical Center in New Iberia.
Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Msgr. J. Douglas Courville will officiate at the Funeral Mass. His daughters, Carol and Connie, will read the Scriptures, and his grandchildren will serve as Gift Bearers.
Mr. Poirier served in the United States Army National Guard Reserves for nine years. "Neg" as he was better known to his family and friends, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his wife, Leona, who was the love of his life for 54 years.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Landry Poirier; one son, Warren Poirier and his wife, Connie; one daughter, Carol Darbonne and her husband, Timmy, all of St. Martinville; one sister, Velma Thibodeaux and her husband, Lee Roy, of Henderson; three grandchildren, Jackie Boudreaux and her husband, Jude, of Parks, Casey Gibson and her husband, Eric, of St. Martinville, A. J. Darbonne, of St. Martinville, two step grandchildren, Danielle Andrus and her husband, Philip, and Justin Darbonne and his wife, Danielle, all of Lewisburg; three great grandchildren, Brylee Andrus, Saige Soileau, and Karson Darbonne, all of Lewisburg; and a sister-in-law, Antonia Landry Poirier.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Olita Guilbeau Poirier; and three brothers, Donald, Wilfred, and Ray Joseph Poirier.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Thursday and continue at 7 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville is in charge of arrangements.
