St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm, on Monday, August 29, 2016, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for Wilfred Joseph Derouen, 91, who passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm on Monday, at Pellerin Funeral Home in St. Martinville. A rosary will be prayed at 11:00 am on Monday.
Rev. Michael Sucharski will officiate at the Funeral Mass. The reader will be Valerie A. Derouen and gift bearers will be Natalie R. Derouen and Donna Bailey. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Mr. Derouen was employed at Jefferson Island Salt Mine for 22 years. A devout Catholic, he was actively involved throughout the church community and was a member of the St. Joseph Society group in Delcambre, the Associates of the Blessed Sacrament, and he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. Wilfred was known for his whistling and singing and as a pastime he enjoyed gardening, talking about family history and "old times", eating chocolate fudge and pecans, and cooking, especially his favorite meal, gumbo. He cherished moments spent with his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ledet Derouen of St. Martinville; son, Gerald J. Derouen and wife Pam of St. Martinville; daughter, Donna Bailey and husband Russell of Austin, TX; sister, Dorothy Louis of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Valerie A. Derouen of Baton Rouge, Natalie R. Derouen of Shreveport, Travis Bailey of Austin, TX, and Ashton Bailey of Austin, TX.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Felicia Derouen; parents, Olivier and Victorine Broussard Derouen; brothers, Howard Derouen, Junius Derouen, Wallace Derouen, Roy Derouen, and Horace Derouen; and his sisters, Nelia Lombard and Nolia Louis.
Pallbearers will be Alvin Hunt, Michael Louviere, Ronald Bernard, Trenton Derouen, Ronald Gordon, and Roland Derouen II.
Honorary pallbearers will be Roland Derouen, Raymond Derouen, Henry Clyde Ledet, Russell Bailey, Peter Derouen, Henry Harleaux, Jr., Murphy Johnson, Jr., and Brandon J. Ledet.
