St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Wonest Joseph Decuir, Sr., 75, who passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Notre Dame Catholic Church from 7:00 am until service time on Saturday, September 19, 2020.
A rosary will be prayed at 9:30 am on Saturday.
Rev. Abelardo Gabriel SVD will officiate at the Funeral Mass and the con-celebrant will be Fr. Arockiam Arockiam. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace in St. Martinville.
Wonest was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver and St. Anthony's Church Choir in Broussard. He enjoyed singing, listening to classic and gospel music, cutting his grass, detailing his car, taking daily rides to the Post Office and drinking his Chevis Regal Scotch. Wonest was a truck driver for Saia Freight for 40 plus years and was the recipient of the 1 Million-Mile Accident-Free certificate. After retirement, he became a school bus driver for ESA and made many lasting friendships with the students. Wonest also had a special relationship with the train conductors who would acknowledge his wave with a special horn sound as they would pass by. He will forever be remembered for his love, dedication, and support given to his family.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie M. Decuir of Broussard; two sons, Wonest (Phyllis) Decuir, Jr., of Cade and Homer J. (Carleen) Decuir, Sr., of Cade; two daughters, Brigid (Kenneth) Zacharie of Cade and Angella (Gerard) Malveaux of Houston; seven grandchildren, Kenneth Zacharie, Jr., Travis Zacharie, James Broden, Homer Decuir, Jr., Logan Denatto, Adriana Malveaux and Kristen Malveaux; and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Edna Mitchell Decuir; brother, Albert Decuir, Sr.; and nephew, Albert Decuir, Jr.
